    1. Shepardson Eco Experience Pingree Park October 5 th -7th, 2009
    2. Objectives of Eco Week
      • Students learn about Colorado ecosystems in a natural setting.
      • Ecology theme in all subject areas
      • Students interact with others in a positive, supportive environment
      • An unforgettable, rewarding experience
    3. Essential Learnings
      • 1. Students understand that the nature of science involves a particular way of building knowledge and making meaning of the natural world.
      • 1a. There is interaction and interdependence between and among nonliving and living components of environments (example: food webs, symbiotic and parasitic relationships, dependence on rainfall, pollination).
      • 1b. Natural processes change Earth's surface (example: weathering, erosion, mountain building, volcanic activity, earthquakes and floods).
      • 1c. Astronomy helps us understand the universe and our place in it.
      • 2. Students will develop an appreciation of the environment and become personally involved in conserving environmental resources.
      • 3. Students will identify and understand cross-curricular connections through participation in interdisciplinary activities.

    5. Dorm Style Rooms
      • Newer north dorm
      • Rooms sleep 4 to 8 people
      • Separate boy/girl wings
      • Common area between wings
      • Adult supervision in dorms at all times

    7. Schedule
      • Day One
      • Parents bring students to school at regular time with gear
      • Leave around 9:00 am on buses
      • Arrive at Pingree around 11:30 am
      • Eat sack lunch from home
      • First two classes
      • Dinner
      • Night Activity
      • Day Two
      • Breakfast 6:45-7:30am
      • Hiking
      • Dinner 5:15-6:00pm
      • Night Activity
      • Day Three
      • Breakfast & Pack up
      • Last Class
      • Head Home/Eat Lunch
      • Arrive back at school around 2:30 pm
    8. ECO CLASSES
      • Stream Ecology taught by WaterSHED program through the City of Fort Collins
      • Wildlife Discovery taught by Pingree Staff
      • Ropes Course

      • Opportunities to develop self-confidence in a safe setting
      • Students wear helmets and harnesses
      • Activities are optional
      • Students support each other and team build
      • Taught by Pingree Staff

      • All hikes led by experienced Pingree Staff and at least two Shepardson staff
      • 2 different hikes available
      • Awesome sense of accomplishment

    15. Behavioral Expectations
              • Classroom & school rules apply
              • Ratio of 1 adult to 10 students
              • Eco Team: Kelsey Rasmussen, Beth Brown, Jamie Mekelburg, AJ Kantor and Shaun Cornwall
              • Parents will be expected to pick up any child that needs to return to town!

      • Sack lunch needs to be brought from home the first day
      • Cafeteria style meals with lots of choices
      • Special diets honored
      • No candy, gum, junk food
      • Can bring pre-packaged trail mix, power bars, granola bars, other snacks provided
      • Bring water bottles

      • Nurse on duty
      • Nurse dispenses all medication
      • Medical forms will be in ECO packet
      • Prescription medicine in original containers
      • Permission note for over the counter medicine
      • All medication identified with medication form in Ziploc bag to be collected the morning of the trip
      • Exception: inhalers, students may carry in backpack
    19. Medicine cont.
      • Please give Dramamine to students before they get on bus. 1 ½ hour ride with curvy roads
      • No vitamins, cough drops, etc. If found, Code of Conduct violation
      • H1N1 – please wash hands!! Teachers will provide hand sanitizer in dorms, hikes, etc. See PSD website for additional information on prevention.
      • If unsure, use “Is my child too sick for a field trip” paper in packet as a reference.
    20. Equipment List
      • Dress in layers, it can get cold!
      • No need to spend a lot
      • Let us know if you need something---before the last day!
      • Really important - Two pairs of shoes in case one pair gets wet. 3-4 pairs of socks.
      • Pack sunscreen!
      • Be careful on size/weight of bags
