What's going viral, and how can you get it? Social media has a ton of lingo, Viral is one of the more important terms. In social media marketing we want to spread our messaging far and wide, this presentation explains how to do just that.

This was designed and presented live by me for in 2012. Storytelling and slide animation are not included here.

Enjoy,
Corinne Cavanaugh

  • Technology is moving fast!
    Stat
    Stat
    Stat
    Stat
What does this tell us in general?
Social media is not going away and it’s not a thing to be feared
Millennials are not the only one’s worth targeting (stat) sm is mainstream.
    What does this tell us
  • Millennials are not the only one’s worth targeting (stat) sm is mainstream.
  • Martha, 9, daily pics & reviews of her school lunch
    June 2012, Scotland
Unintentional global health movement - food from around the world
Publicity → $77,000 in donations for children in Malawi
    http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/16/world/europe/girl-9-gives-school-lunch-failing-grade.html
  • What was secret is now very public
    Testimonials mean much more.
Doing the right thing gets a lot of attention.
  • Let’s deconstruct going viral.
    Definition
The most well known viral trend is flashmobs…
  • What makes content viral, how to develop it/Content strategy
What FUN!? Why do you go onto social media?
To see pictures of family, kids, grandkids?
    To see a Ted Talk?
    To see the news?
    Us too!
The 4 things you need to create something viral are:
Needs an attention grabbing title (extra extra)
Needs to be centered around one key point ( key)
Needs to interest the viewer/ relate to them/answer a question
    Needs to surprise your viewers!
  • So here is a short clip ofKevin Alocca is a very wise man. As the trends manager at Youtube,
    VIDEO START:
So what are the take away’s that he’s learned and now we’ve learned?
Creating participation is a KEY ingredient to spreading viral content.
Timing is also something to consider. The average trend of viral content is on average 2-4 months.
If you are using a prop or gimmic that is trending, catching and riding that wave in a timely manner is important!
  • This is THE MOST liked post in history.
    Sat:
The campaign OBAMA campaign actually used social media as a curtail tool in the campaign, going so far as to design an mobile app that
Gave people an easy way to share marekting material
Locate their nearest obama volunteer group or activity by gps location in
    Gave updates of campaign news
    Requested / accepted donations r
All right there in the palm of your hand, on your smart phone.
  • Ask yourself these 4 questions:
Posts that are not a good idea:
Negative in nature. (think about it, no one ‘likes’ this at all!)
More then a sentence or two. (attention spans are extremely short, no one has time to read it all!)
Pure advertisement with no fluff. (no one likes to be advertised AT- especially when they are trying to see pictures of their grandkids online).
    Think it? Test it!
The great thing about social media is you can within 24 hours see results (or not) for free.
This type of testing can also be used as intel in general business practices.
  • Ok, so now you have some type of content or content idea.
How do you get it out there?
  • Marketing beyond your current Facebook Fanbase
Social media - the germ you want to spread: “Sneezers’ are at the core of any ideavirus. Sneezers are the ones who when they tell ten or twenty or 100 people about an idea—people believe them” - Seth Godin (author of “IdeaVirus”)
    http://www.forbes.com/sites/cherylsnappconner/2013/02/05/social-media-sneezing-the-germ-you-really-do-want-to-spread/
  • This is called officially advocate strategy. But trust me, you will likely remember sneezing!
The idea is- strategically marketing to, with, or from someone who is influential or a ‘trendsetter’ is the way to go.
They effect if executed correctly is exponential and you reach many more people than your audience that already ‘likes’ you.
  • Finding your company’s brand advocates
Why find them? They share! advocate strategy (going beyond your fanbase)
This is a graphic that displays social media use by age. I don’t really believe it’s all about age, it’s mainly about who your customer is and what they enjoy doing in their free time. So this is to point out that very point. Many age groups are using social media- and age is not soley a determination.
It’s more attitude. Who are your people?
  • When determining if an advocate qualifies for our clients outreach efforts we ask
    Consider
-Are you in the same target location?
-How large is their fan base?
-Is their fanbase similar to yours?
-Will their fans be pleasantly surprised to learn about you or likely irritated?
Knowing your story and who wants to hear it is crucial.
Your (brand story) is incredibly important to identifying advocates and creating content.
Example – client action plan (discuss!)
  • What would your adience find fun, interesting, surprising?
What’s compelling- content that is fun, content that speaks to your audience, and content people can participate in.
Sneezing is using advocate strategy to spread the word. Identifying trend setters and getting the content to them to share.
