  • 2. HISTORY OF TOMMY HILFIGER
    Born in 1951, Tommy Hilfiger made his first foray into fashion in New York campus kids in 1969. 
    Building on the success of his first shop, People's Place, Hilfiger had established a chain of 10 specialty stores in upstate New York by the age of 26.
  • 3. During 70’s
    He turned to designing and for a period worked for Jordache before launching his own label in 1985.
    He created the Tommy Hilfiger Corporation in 1984, but did not go public until 1992.
  • 4. By 1990, sales of Tommy Hilfiger clothes had topped $25 million (£15m).
  • 5. Until the early 90’s, Hilfiger's market profile was similar to that for Calvin Klein
    In 1994 gangsta rapper Snoop Doggy Dog appeared wearing a Tommy Hilfiger shirt on the premier US TV show Saturday Night Live and his sales rocketed overnight
  • 6. In 1995, Hilfiger was named Menswear Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of America. 
    Soon Hilfiger became known for his signature line in menswear. He was also known for his jeans line which he expanded to include women's wear
  • 7. By 2004Hilfiger's revenue was in excess of $1.8 billion with more than 5,000 employees.
    In 2006 sales had begun to decline that he decided to sell the company and sold his company for $1.6 billion to Apax Partners.
    In 2010Phillips-Van Heusen, owner of Calvin Klein bought the Tommy Hilfiger company for $3 billion.
