Music videos demonstrate genrecharacteristics- Indie The indie genre of music video generally follows a strict set of guidelines, but the band being in the video in some way or another is always the most common. This video is no different apart from the fact that the band isnt necessarily the band. They play different characters within the video which contrasts with the majority of otherThis video is also quite stereotypical as indie videos which simply show thethe video is male oriented, focusing on band as something separate fromboys trying to impress girls which is the video.something which is present in almostevery indie style video.
Relationship between lyrics andvisuals The lyrics start with ‘I messed up’ something which correlates with the body language of the on screen character. This is of course illustrative as the lyrics are seen in a physical form on screen. Because of this, much of the video is relative to the lyrics such as when the lyric ‘I’m always late’ is used as the on screen character is shown to be late to the fights which take place in theThe phrase ‘I cant blame you for being narrative.you’ is used which certainly hascorrelations with the fact that he is indeeda vampire and someone who is isolatedfrom society. ‘But you cant blame me forhating it’ is another lyric which correlateswith the video as the main protagonist isfrequently seen as hating himself becausehe is isolated from women.
Continued During the chorus the words ‘kiss her, kiss her’ which is clearly amplified as he isnt kissing her but biting her, the use of the bite lead to this particular scene being strangely sexual. Something which is especially relevant within indie music videos as they frequently contain a lot of features related to teen angst and girls which are almost always present, generally in a position in which they are teasing the male.Indie films do not typically containespecially sexual content, althoughthis does in the way the vampiresseduce the women something whichisnt so much focused on the sexualelement but on the seductioninvolved in the video.
There is a relationship betweenmusic and visualsThe music within the song doesn’t really have a huge relationshipwith what happens on screen, this is typical as usually indie stylemusic cannot be matched to on screen performances. 4.The demands of the record label will include the need for lots ofclose ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recuracross their work ( a visual style.) The overall theme of the video is vampires, so obviously this would require a variety of close up shots of the vampires themselves. These shots generally help to exaggerate the teeth of the vampires or the eyes. Close ups are also used to highlight the sensual features of later parts of the video in which the vampires seduce the women, exaggerating the sexual nature of the video.
5. There is frequently reference to notion oflooking (screens within screen, telescopes, etc. ) and particularly voyeuristic (sexual)treatment of the female body. This is present within this music video as women are shown asbeing something which are owned by the vampires in the video, and shown as being quite sexual because of the idea of seductionwhich is especially present in the video.
6. There is often intertextual reference (tofilms, TV programmes, other music videosetc.) Although the video does not directly link to other pieces of media, it does make several pop culture references in the form of common ideas about vampires and even takes ideas from the tv show ‘Buffy the vampire slayer’ and even the film ‘Ghostbusters’. The pop culture references also come in the form of the way boys generally swoon over girls and this is another feature which is especially prevalent in most indie music videos.
Whether the video is primarily performancebased, narrative based or concept based andhow elements of each is used in it.This music video is certainly narrative based for the majority of thevideo, but on some occasions the video will switch to the band whoare also playing roles within the narrative. The narrative side of thisvideo is of course used to display the story of a vampire who longsto be human, but the members of the band are shown in the form ofcharacters within the video itself.
