      • 1962 - Wins first prize for work among the poor: Padma Shri award
      • 1962-Magsaysay Award
      • 1971 - Receives the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize
      • 1972-Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding
      • 1979 - Awarded Nobel Peace Prize
      • 1980-Bharat Ratna
      • 1985 - Awarded Medal of Freedom.
      • Leo Tolstoy International Award
    5. Sickness 
      • 1983 - Has heart attack
      • 1989 - second heart attack
      • 1992 - Enters hospital for treatment of pneumonia and congestive heart failure.
      • 1993 - breaks three ribs, hospitalized for malaria, undergoes surgery for blocked blood vessel
      • 1996 - breaks collarbone, suffers malarial fever and left ventricle failure, receives honorary citizenship on November sixteenth.
      • September 5, 1997 - Dies of a massive heart attack
    6. What she did
      • 1950 - Founds the Missionaries of Charity.
      • 1952 - Opens Nirmal Hriday ("Pure Heart")
      • 1953 - Opens orphanage.
      • 1957 - Begins her work with lepers
      • 1958 - first facility opens in Drachi, India
      • 1971 -uses $25,000 to build a leper colony.
    7. Why did she do what she did?

      • Being unwanted, unloved,
      • uncared for, forgotten by
      • everybody, I think that is
      • a much greater hunger,
      • a much greater poverty

      • has nothing to eat.
