1. 1. BETTER COMMUNITYBETTER LIFE
‘CHANGING COMMUNITY’
KAMPUNG BAGAN AJAM
BY
FORM 1 BETA (2010)
SMK DATO’ ONN
13000 BUTTERWORTH
PENANG, MALAYSIA.
2. 2. LOCATIONKG BAGAN AJAM WAS A FISHING VILLAGE, LOCATED NORTH OF BUTTERWORTH TOWN , WHICH IS BEHIND OUR SCHOOL.
3. 3. KAMPONG BAGAN AJAM, BAGAN AJAM, BUTTERWORTH, PENANG.
THE COMMUNITY

People lived in wooden houses
 4. 4. People travelled on narrow earth and tar roads
 5. 5. People did not use air conditioners

THE ECONOMY
The kampong elders tell us that before, the sea was rich with fishes and the sand was white and clean. Many people were fisherman and they fished in sampans and along the sea shore.
There were only small coffee shops and sundry shops
Very few people were educated or held high paying jobs.
6. 6. THE SURRONDINGS CHANGED
As manufacturing industries grew in the 1980’s, faster transportation was needed. Butterworth became a container service port in 2000. Trunk roads and kampong roads became fly-overs and highways.
The Penang Bridge was built in 1980’s.
7. 7. THE ECONOMY CHANGED
When the sea became polluted and environment changed, the fishermen lost their livelihood and they were forced to turn to other jobs to survive. The community in Kampong BaganAjam had to turned to service industries, they moved into the food business.
Just like the community in Great Yarmouth, a fishing town in England, where its council embarked on a 20-year plan to set up a business park, boost tourism, the BaganAjam Local Council built a complex to house cafes and eateries for the people of Kampong BaganAjam.
Meanwhile others found work in the public and manufacturing sector. The community had a more stable income .
8. 8. DEVELOPMENT CHANGED THE COMMUNITY
A part of the kampong land was developed into a major road. Some of the people had to move to make way for development. Urbanisation came . People were forced to live in flats. They could no longer rear chickens and plant herbs as there was no garden to do so.
9. 9. NATURE & PEOPLE CHANGED THE COMMUNITY’S ENVIRONMENT
The kampong beach became a local tourist attraction. People visit the beaches to fish and picnic but they also pollute the beaches with plastic bags and trash.
Sea erosion took away the beautiful beaches so embankments were built to protect the beaches.
The sea became polluted from ships, the building of the Penang Bridge and by industrial waste.
Now there are fewer fishes in the sea.
10. 10. TRADITIONAL AND MODERN LIVING IN HARMONY
Some of the people in the community welcomed change and now live in big modern houses, but others resisted change and continue to live as before. they still fish and live a simple, quite life.
11. 11. CLEANING UP KAMPONG BAGAN AJAM
From our study of Kampong BaganAjam, we realised that man is the main factor in bringing change to our community. We thought man should then be able to change some things back to what they were before. We the members of Connecting Classrooms, decided to bring back some of the beauty of Kampong BaganAjam .
12. 12. With help from our principal, teachers and friends, we held a cleanup at the beach. From our cleanup project we found broken umbrellas, plastic bags, old clothing and lots and lots of cigarette butts on the beach.
13. 13. TO CREATE PUBLIC AWARENESS ON REDUCING TRASH
OUR SECURITY GUARD
To create public awareness of the need for change in this area, we put up posters and banners to encourage the community of Kampong BaganAjam to reduce waste through recycling.
14. 14. CLEAN THE COMMUNITY
CLEAN THE BEACHES
EDUCATE THE COMMUNITY
PUT UP SIGNS AS REMINDERS
We wanted to create a public awareness on keeping the kampong beach clean. Thus, we placed recycling bins outside our school gate to encourage the community to participate in recycling waste and thus keep the kampong environment clean.
15. 15. EDUCATING THE COMMUNITY
We invited the community members of Kampong BaganAjam to our school on our Co-Curricular Day. We shared with them the benefits of recycling and keeping the environment clean.
16. 16. KAMPONG BAGAN AJAM COMMUNITY TODAY
Today Kg BaganAjam is a much cleaner village.
Not many crows are found in the village.
There is less litter.
We found that though it is difficult teaching the public clean habits, it is not an impossible task.
But our efforts have brought some positive changes and we are proud of ourselves.
Thank you British Council for making us responsible citizens, who are aware of what we can do for the community.
