  1. 1. Social Network Analysis
  2. 2. no…
  3. 3. not those social networks
  4. 4. but the real life social networks that exist all around us
  5. 5. using powerful statistics, we can learn a lot of often unseen things about what’s going on in those social networks
  6. 6. imagine what that could mean for journalism
  7. 7. can’t?
  8. 8. well, we’ll give you a pretty basic example
  9. 9. Imagine…
  10. 10. you’re at a city council meeting
  11. 11. and the mayor doesn’t seem all that happy
  12. 12. You’re not sure why
  13. 13. so
  14. 14. you ask…
  15. 15. It doesn’t go well
  16. 16. it makes you wonder
  17. 17. what’s the Mayor’s deal?
  18. 18. your D EA D L I N E approaches
  19. 19. so, you go over your notes
  20. 20. it’s slow going and your deadline inches near
  21. 21. the mayor’s temper tantrum
  22. 22. is a m y s t e r y
  23. 23. then
  24. 24. you have an idea
  25. 25. things were going well until XYZ Corp. came up in the meeting
  26. 26. they wanted permission to build a new factory by the river, but the council said no
  27. 27. the XZY Corp. mayor
  28. 28. but nothing (at least that you can see) ties them together
  29. 29. the XZY Corp. mayor
  30. 30. so, you start with what you know about the mayor and make a graph of his social network
  31. 31. XZY Corp. the city council the the mayor’s mayor wife the mayor’s son
  32. 32. that’s a good start, but it still doesn’t explain the mayor’s reaction
  33. 33. then, you remember the mayor’s brother-in-law
  34. 34. XZY Corp. the city council the mayor’s brother -in-law the mayor the mayor’s wife the mayor’s son
  35. 35. he’s the city’s richest businessman
  36. 36. Company Company Company Company Company A B C D E XZY Corp. the mayor’s brother -in-law the the city the mayor’s mayor council wife the mayor’s son
  37. 37. but still, that doesn’t explain things
  38. 38. Why was the mayor so upset?
  39. 39. you look at the Mayor’s social network
  40. 40. and do some analysis
  41. 41. ij ji
  42. 42. the results are surprising … they tell you
  43. 43. that the brother-in-law is more important to this story than you thought
  44. 44. XZY Corp. Company Company Company Company Company A B C D E the mayor’s brother- in-law the the city the mayor’s mayor council wife the mayor’s son
  45. 45. tada!!
  46. 46. suddenly, it all makes sense you celebrate! a break through!
  47. 47. let us explain … after focusing on the brother-in-law
  48. 48. and after digging through some SEC documents
  49. 49. Company XYZ E Corp. you learn that Company E is the majority shareholder of XYZ Corp.
  50. 50. Company E and… that the Mayor’s wife holds 49 percent of Company E’s stock the (her brother’s company) mayor’s wife
  51. 51. XZY Company Company Company Company Company A B C D E Corp. the mayor’s brother- in-law the the city the mayor’s mayor council wife the mayor’s son
  52. 52. so
  53. 53. When the city council said no to XYZ Corp. …
  54. 54. $$$ They lost
  55. 55. And so did Company E
  56. 56. which means
  57. 57. so did the mayor’s wife
  58. 58. which means
  59. 59. so did the mayor
  60. 60. You write a story saying that it was all about the money
  61. 61. and come election day
  62. 62. the voters say goodbye to the mayor
