OVERVIEW: SMART 2020
OVERVIEW: SMART 2020
SMART 2020: ENABLING THE LOW CARBON ECONOMY
IN THE INFORMATION AGE
What is the climate change impact
of ICTs?
How can ICTs reduce the footprint of
other processes and sectors
How can ICTs capture new business
opportunities in the low carbon economy

SMART 2020 KEY FINDINGS
All units are GtCO2e
SMART 2020 identified savings of
7.8 Gt CO2e that could be delivered
by ICT solutions in 2020 – FIVE
times the sector’s footprint and 15%
of global emissions.
2007 = 0.83
THE ENABLING EFFECT
In 2020, ICT could
enable reductions of
7.8 Gt CO2e
SMART 2020: GLOBAL VALUE
> Smart motors and industrial automation would reduce .97 GtCO2e
in 2020, worth €68 billion ($107.2 billion)
> Savings from smart logistics applications would reach 1.52
GtCO2e, with energy savings worth €280 billion ($441.7 billion)
> Smart buildings technologies could enable 1.68 GtCO2e of
emissions savings, worth €216 billion ($340.8 billion)
> Smart grid technologies could globally reduce 2.03 GtCO2e ,
worth €79 billion ($124.6 billion)
Total Value: EUR 600 billion ($946.5 billion)
