    • Breakout Session Agenda Urban Sustainability Modeling and Services Themed Breakout Session Day 1: Thursday, May 21, 2009 Time: 10:30 a.m.–12 p.m. Overview At the intersection of urban design, innovation, and public policy, Internet-based services and digital media are emerging to enable 21st-century cities to connect, measure, analyze, and visualize; social interaction and human behavior, energy flow, carbon emission levels, transportation, resource usage, the performance of objects, buildings, urban and natural environments globally. In this context, the Urban EcoMap application in the Connected Urban Development program is intended as the first module in a global digital ecosystem for—and among—cities. This urban- services platform provides an approach to real-time sustainability intelligence that enables citizens, communities, cities, countries, and business organizations alike to make smarter decisions and develop policies that drive innovation and improve the sustainability of cities. Services include—but are not limited to—citizen engagement, collaboration, community-building, professional geo- referential data, real-time environmental and energy metering and monitoring, simulations for real estate development, transportation planning, location marketing, and city games. Urban EcoMap provides a single, global platform and, more important, enables cities to maintain a global “pulse” on the eco-health of their urban environments. This session explores the vision and roadmap for the development of a global urban services platform for 21st-century cities. City, academic, and industry leaders will share their achievements, challenges and lessons learned.
