Conference Transcript Break out session: Connected and Sustainable Cities San Francisco, Day 2 February 21st 2008 Each panelist’s contribution is summarised below Chris Luebkeman, Director Innovation and foresight – ARUP (moderator) Livia Tirone, Principal – Tirone Nunes • 90% of our time is spent inside buildings, and buildings therefore have a significant impact on health and wellbeing. 40% of energy use is directly connected to buildings, and buildings are responsible for a significant amount of waste. But it is more in their operation than in their construction that the waste occurs with most buildings doubling their construction costs within between seven and twenty years of construction being completed. The focus needs to be on the lifecycle value and costs
