Editor's Notes
As we reported last year, the number of mobile subscribers outpace d the number of fixed line subscribers in 2002. Globally, there are 1.155 billion mobile cellular subscribers around the world, compared with 1.129 billion fixed telephone lines. One in five people around the world now has a mobile phone --up from one in 339 in 1991. But one of the most exciting indicators this year is that over 500 million mobile subscribers are in developing countries, compared to 3 million in 1993 . Put another way, 46% of worldwide mobile cellular users are in developing countries. And this growth has all been very recent. Let’s take a look at some country examples. China is now the largest mobile market in the world. This year, China has been adding 5 million mobile subscribers a month . In August alone, Russia added some 1.6 million new mobile subscribers . India is promoting vigorous competition across service sectors. India added 1 million subscribers in July 2003 alone . It expects its total number of fixed, mobile cellular and Wireless Local Loop subscribers to rise from approximately 61 million in September 2003 to 100 m illion by 2008. Africa has had the highest mobile service growth rate of any region over the past five years . Nigeria increased its teledensity by a factor of four between 2000 and 2002 following the licensing of three mobile operators in 2001.
