I presented on Learning Analytics and the Student Experience at the Higher Education Smart Card Association forum on June 3rd 2014. This talk is about how we take a transparent approach to improving the student experience by exploring the "digital exhaust" of data gathered by students' interactions with the IT systems of the modern smart campus. I look at considerations around student access to data (cf. Google Takeout) and the underlying social contract governing what student data is collected and what uses it is put to. I also look at some Jisc innovations such as our work to develop a new business intelligence service with HESA, and potential shared services around learning analytics.

In a landmark book, he described how the modern world overwhelmed people with data and that this overabundance was both "confusing and harmful" to the mind. The media now echo his concerns with reports on the unprecedented risks of living in an "always on" digital environment.
