These are my slides for the session on future and emerging technologies that I am running for the University of Derby's annual staff conference on May 19th/20th 2014. In this talk I look at the challenges that the sector is facing at present through changes such as the removal of student number controls, the changing fees regime, the Post-PC and cloud computing era, MOOCs and increasing globalization. I go on to explore how institutions can go about orchestrating the data that they hold to yield new insights on (for example) student recruitment and retention. I close by looking at approaches to co-design, service design, gaps that exist in current institutional service provision, and emerging new technologies such as research data management and learning analytics. All this, and kittens too!

Martin Hamilton @martin_hamilton m.hamilton@jisc.ac.uk http://martinh.net From Vaughn Bell in Slate [http://goo.gl/YW1DW0]: A respected Swiss scientist, Conrad Gessner, might have been the first to raise the alarm about the effects of information overload. In a landmark book, he described how the modern world overwhelmed people with data and that this overabundance was both "confusing and harmful" to the mind. The media now echo his concerns with reports on the unprecedented risks of living in an "always on" digital environment. Future and EmergingTechnologies: 2. Get the Data? Information Overload
