    • WESTERN OASIS WESTERN OASIS Presented by Bennett Jones Visitors are invited to take a break from the action and excitement of the Stampede Midway and enter the cool and inviting Western Oasis. Guests can take their time, reflect on the art and water features, enjoy cowboy poetry and music, and appreciate good food and the wine paired with it. This truly is an oasis on Stampede Park. Situated in Halls D and E of the BMO Centre, visitors will experience a wave of artistic excellence that includes photographs, bronzes, paintings, cooking demonstrations, arts and crafts and western entertainment. Integrated throughout the western art and lifestyles displays are relaxing oasis areas highlighted with natural outdoor elements such as stone, greenery and water features. In the centre is the 10,000 square-foot Western Oasis Wine Garden. This area features relaxing entertainment and unique wine tasting opportunities to take you away. Western Oasis is presented by the Calgary Stampede’s own Western Showcase committee, and also features the perennial favourite Kitchen Theatre, with live cooking demonstrations and instruction, as well as top notch performances at the Window on the West Stage. WESTERN ART AND LIFESTYLES Media partner – XL103 BMO Centre, Halls D and E www.westernshowcase.com From cowboy poets to duelling chefs, auctioning to sugar art, Western Art and Lifestyles is not to be missed at this year’s Stampede. Hundreds of artists and musicians, poets and chefs, artisans and bands are gathered to celebrate the western way of life. Watch artists at work, listen to poetry inspired by the campfire, or enjoy a juried competition of Western Cowboy Hats. Art has always played a big role in the Calgary Stampede. In 1912, at the first Stampede, there were three artists selling their work including Charlie Russell. His 20-piece exhibit was such a big draw that it was moved to the Royal Building downtown for a week after Stampede was over. He sold most of his pieces and was inspired to start his famous RCMP series. A watercolour from Russell’s 1912 Calgary Stampede Art Show has toured with the Glenbow Museum’s show Capturing Legends - Russell, Remington and the Canadian Frontier (information provided by the Glenbow Museum). Decades later, in 1971, a group of 14 former Stampede Queens and Princesses formed the Women’s World committee and launched a display. In 1978 they changed the name to Creative Living because both men and women were participating. WESTERN OASIS 85
    • To better reflect the western theme, it became Western Showcase in 1999 and in 2006, Western Showcase became the umbrella name for the Western Art Show (with its Artists’ Studios, Art Gallery, Art Auction, Artist Ranch Project and Western Photo Gallery) and Western Lifestyles (which includes Kitchen Theatre, Creative Arts and Crafts and Window on the West). In 2009, the Oasis was integrated with Western Showcase to encapsulate the whole western art and lifestyle experience as Western Oasis. NEW IN 2010 Western Art Auction Auction items this year include a 37” replica of the bronze ‘Outlaw’ created by artist, Richard Loffler. The life size version of the legendary bull was commissioned by the Calgary Stampede Public Art program and the Calgary Chartered Financial Analysts Society and is located in the heart of Calgary’s downtown business district. In addition, the Auction will feature an original piece by Charlie Russell titled “the Great Foot Race”. Western Photo Gallery Photo Competition Returning by popular demand, the Western Photo Competition will feature outstanding photography highlighting western lifestyles and imagery. These wonderful photos will be shown in a continuous video loop format throughout the day in a seated screening area in the Western Photo Gallery area. Creative Arts and Crafts Vote on the Art of the Western Cowboy Hat. This year’s competition is ‘A whimsical look at the cowboy hat’. A People’s Choice Award will be given for the best cowboy hat. Entries will be judged by the visitors to the Western Oasis and the winning entrant will be awarded a $200 cash prize. Eco Art Eco Art has been added as a new section in the Creative Arts and Crafts. This competition is about taking items destined for the landfill and turning them into art. All items are a minimum of 85% recycled materials Window on the West Learn how to yodel with Mary Resek (July 15) or the Bowes Bros (July 14). Two step along with the Jeritol Jivers (July 13). THE WESTERN ART SHOW The Western Art Show - one of the largest exhibits of its kind in Canada - includes the Western Photo Gallery, Artists’ Studios, Western Art Gallery, Western Art Auction and Artist Ranch Project. Western Art Show Hall of Fame The Western Art Show Hall of Fame began in 2007 to honour artists whose work and participation have had a significant impact on the success of the Western Art Show over nearly three decades. In 2007 two long-time contributors to the Western Art Show, Gina McDougall Cohoe and Mac Mackenzie, became the first inductees. In 2008 Jay Contway was honoured, and Dale Auger was the inductee in 2009. In 2010 the Western Art Show is honouring Vilem Zach. The Western Photo Gallery The Western Photo Gallery features more than 75 framed or unframed fine art, limited edition prints for sale, documenting the rich history of the west. All images submitted to our gallery have been juried by photographic professionals. This year will mark the return of the Photo Competition where the nearly 100 juried photos may be viewed in a continuous loop format daily. Karen Brownlee’s ties to the prairies of Southern Alberta go back to the 1880’s. Oral storytelling has taken a strong role in influencing her interest in the historic, cultural landscape. Her paintings speak to the relevance and symbolism of man’s historic relationship with the land and deal with the love of the land and the effort of the generational toil of many farm pioneer families, including her own. Karen resides in Lethbridge, Alberta. She has an extensive and varied arts background as a painter, illustrator, art teacher, art juror and administrator. Jay Contway is a man totally involved with his art. A native Montana artist, Jay raises quarter horses and has spent time on the rodeo circuit. His knowledge and respect for the working cowboy shows clearly in his art. His work illustrates an appreciation for the history, people and animals of the west and his own native ancestry. His commitment to the quality of his art includes his own foundry, adjacent to his studio, where all Jay Contway sculptures are cast. This enables him to oversee the many details of each bronze he creates. All sculptures are limited in number and cast only in bronze or silver. Jay does not sell the original models. People of the Plains – Artistic Expressions This exhibition and sale displays noted aboriginal artists who have been invited to participate. These artists come from many regions of the Canadian Plains. Their art includes flat as well as 3-D pieces and represents the unique style of these cultures. WESTERN OASIS 90
