Godly Wisdom = Good Works James 3:13-18
James 3:13
Vs. 13 - Your good works (including good conduct) show which kind of wisdom you have.
Whether it be from heaven or from here
Avoid Earthly Wisdom
In order to have godly wisdom, you need to avoid wisdom from here (vs. 14-16).
Remove these things from your heart (vs. 14)
“Bitter envy” – gives a picture of someone being jealous of someone else resulting in accusing that person of stealing his people or stealing something.
“Self-seeking” – seeking to gather followers to myself
Remember 3:1 warning about people who wanting to become teachers – resulting in stricter judgment
Avoid Earthly Wisdom
In order to have godly wisdom, you need to avoid wisdom from here (vs. 14-16).
Remove these things from your heart (vs. 14)
“Do not lie and boast against the truth” – teachers who teach truth of Christianity for themselves
Use truth to promote themselves because of bitter envy and self-seeking
Avoid Earthly Wisdom
In order to have godly wisdom, you need to avoid wisdom from here (vs. 14-16).
Remove these things from your heart (vs. 14)
Realize where that kind of feelings is from (vs. 15)
Earthly – “worldly”, being like the world
Sensual – “physical”, full of emotions, animal-like
Demonic – “like demons”, like the Devil himself
Avoid Earthly Wisdom
In order to have godly wisdom, you need to avoid wisdom from here (vs. 14-16).
Remove these things from your heart (vs. 14)
Realize where that kind of feelings is from (vs. 15)
Recognize the results if not remove from heart (vs. 16)
Have bitter envy and self-seeking results in:
Confusion
Every evil thing
God is not author of confusion (1 Cor. 14:33)!
Pursue Heavenly Wisdom
In order to have godly wisdom, avoid the wisdom from here (vs. 14-16).
In order to have godly wisdom, pursue the wisdom from above (vs. 17-18).
Wisdom is from above from who?
God the Trinity (Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit)
God exhibits all wisdom that is right.
We are to imitate God in these things:
Imitate God
We are to imitate God’s character in:
Pure
Peaceable
Gentle
Willing to yield
Full of mercy and good fruits
Without partiality
Without hypocrisy
Righteousness
Pursue Heavenly Wisdom
In order to have godly wisdom, avoid the wisdom from here (vs. 14-16).
In order to have godly wisdom, pursue the wisdom from above (vs. 17-18).
Now, you can have godly wisdom that will result in good works for God!
