Presentation for the International Economic Development Conference , October 8, 2013. Workforce development, talent retention and talent attraction all present special challenges in rural regions. This slideshare looks at the challenges and poses some possible solutions to many of these challenges. This presentation also looks at other programming that is successful whether for rural or urban areas and also proposes changes to the way workforce investment boards engage employers to improve economic development outcomes.

  • 7. Have you looked at the workforce as a “product” through a marketing lens? • Product - quality, usability? • Place – available when and where employers need it? • Price – relative value, competitive? • Promotion – benefits known by potential users?

Better WIB websites (and strategy) • Employer focused – workforce profile – key sectors – business growth information • All training program information • Promote labor force assets! • Contact for WIB and business services team • Industry sector/industry cluster initiatives • Social media - connect businesses with local talent and talent recruitment efforts
  • 9. Promote quality local businesses to jobseekers • Employer of the month • Highlight businesses offering: – tuition reimbursement – home buying programs – family leave – community donations – staff community volunteer programs, etc • Networking opportunities
