  • The evidence for this strategy REPORTS ANALYSIS|2012-2013 Local (in Central Eastern Europe and Turkey) SMEs have innovated and exported successfully. Several local SMEs have shown that successful innovation and export is possible, despite poor brand recognition abroad. Such firms may provide a standard for others to follow. Innovation is essential for sustainable growth. The impact of innovation is shown to be particularly positive on growth for medium-income countries. Most of the innovation in the CEE region in the past two decades has come not from locally owned firms, but from the investments of multinational companies (MNCs), on which local firms have come to rely for new ideas and technology.
