  3. 4 Stages of a Job Opening No job opening, but employers always looking for good employees. The need is clear; the insiders know but no action is taken. Job is now “open”. Referrals desired; applications being accepted. The opening is advertised; a thundering horde of job seekers appears. People get jobs when none are open. Up to this point, you’re competing only with yourself. As time passes, more people who become known to employers get hired, which is why most jobs are never advertised.     • What emotion does the word “networking” evoke for you?
    • Note, focused networking is not telling everyone you know that you’re out of work & need a new job.
    • Focused networking is a career management technique in which you connect with people who have knowledge of the target company & people who have a relationship with decision makers.

Focused Networking Knowledge Relationships Susan Britton Whitcomb - “The Christian’s Career Journey” Quadrant 1 Contacts who have relationships with decision-makers & knowledge of the target company Quadrant 3 Contacts who have relationships with decision-makers but little to no knowledge of the target company. Quadrant 2 Contacts who have knowledge of the target company but no relationships with insiders. Quadrant 4 Contacts who have neither relationships nor knowledge of the target company.

    • Know your objective
      • GIVE: new resources you’ve discovered, special expertise you have, problems you’ve solved
      • GET: answers to challenges you’re facing, resources you need, & people you’d like to meet
    • Apply 1:50 rule – every person knows at least 50 other people
      • Ask, “who do you know that…?”
    • Manage your attitude
      • Wear a smile. Demonstrate positive attitude.

    • Come prepared
      • Questions : how did you get started in the xx biz? What do you enjoy most about your profession? What significant changes have you seen take place in your profession through the years?
      • Map out – how many people will I meet?
      • Verbal business card & mini bio (see Online Networking)
    • Look at networking as a learning experience
      • Evaluate yourself each time; genuinely learn from others and how you can do better next time

      • If you say you’re going to do something, make sure it’s done. Send thank you notes, when appropriate.
