    2. Video
    3. The literature
      • Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Youth
      • by Jon Lasser
      • Identifies the developmental hindrances that GLBT youth (identified and perceived) face in the American public school system due to overt and implied discrimination and unacceptance.
      • Other People’s Children
      • by Lisa Delpit
      • Discusses the notion of power and how we, as teachers and administrators, should use that power to educate and inspire with cultural awareness and inclusive practices. (cultural competence)
    4. Common Themes
      • “ for children to become autonomous, to develop fully who they are in the classroom setting without having arbitrary, outside standards forced upon them.” –(Delpit, 1995, p. 28)
      • We want to create an environment where all children can and want to reach their full potential. Possible options for the students, especially those not within dominant culture…
      • Integrate?
      • Assimilate?
      • Acculturate?
    5. Common Themes
      • “ Issues that need to be openly addressed in schools include discrimination; the philosophy, culture, and values of the school; and the self-esteem (community belonging) and safety (harassment and violence policies) of all students.” (Lasser, 2006, p. 424)
      • What processes must a school go through to identify the norms, values, and cultures of it’s community and then reevaluate it’s own role within that community to be effective?
      • How often must a school do this ?
    6. Common Themes
      • “… .both sides do need to be able to listen, and I contend that it is those with the most power, those in the majority, who must take the greater responsibility for initiating the process.” (Delpit, 1995, p. 46)
      • Top down change is imperative; at the same time, we must keep the perspective that people are experts in their own life.
      • … ..but as in the previous two slides, these themes cannot be brought into fruition without extensive staff training and development!!!
