Fertile Crescent <ul><li>Strip of land that curves from the Mediterranean Sea to the Persian Gulf and has fertile soil </li></ul><ul><li>Located between the Tigris River and the Euphrates River </li></ul><ul><li>Mesopotamia – Greek for “land between rivers” </li></ul><ul><li>Covers area of Iraq, parts of Syria, Turkey </li></ul>
  3. 3. 1 st Settlers <ul><li>People first settled in this area around 4000 BC </li></ul><ul><li>Farmed the fertile soil left behind by the yearly floods </li></ul><ul><li>To control flooding & get water to their fields they: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Built walls, waterways, & ditches (irrigation) </li></ul></ul>
  4. 4. City States <ul><li>City-State - city and area it governs </li></ul><ul><li>Sumerians – first inhabitants form city state around 3000 BC </li></ul><ul><li>Each city builds temple to a specific god (Polytheism-worship of many gods and goddesses) </li></ul>
