  • 1. Ancient Egypt “Gift of the Nile”
  • 2. 1 st Settlers
    • People first settled in this area around 5000 BC
    • 1 st settlements were along the Nile River
    • Farmed the fertile soil left behind by the yearly floods
    • Protected from invaders by desert, the sea, & the Nile’s waterfalls
  • 3. The Nile River
    • “the river in the sand”
    • Was used to travel between cities (this removed the need for many roads)
    • Helped promote trade
    • The mud from the river banks was used for pottery & bricks
    • Provided papyrus, the plant used for making paper
  • 4. Flooding of the Nile
    • Flooded every year
    • Left behind silt (natural fertilizer)
    • Could not control flooding
      • Positive – provided good farmland
      • Negative – could wipe out crops
  • 5. The Pharaoh & Gods
    • Egyptian rulers or Kings were called Pharaohs
    • Pharaohs were not only in charge of the country but also a god (Theocracy)
    • They owned all the land & everything in it
    • Built huge temples, monuments, & pyramids
  • 6. Pyramids
    • 4 triangular sided tomb
    • Built as afterlife palaces for pharaohs (not for people like you and me!)
  • 7. Afterlife
    • Religion was very important to Egyptians
    • When you died you went to the next life – everything you would need was placed in your grave (food, clothing, etc…)
    • Tombs were decorated with art
    • Bodies were preserved from decay – Mummies
    • Regular offerings were made to honor the dead
  • 8. Egyptian Inventions
    • Created a system of writing that used symbols – Hieroglyphics
    • Locks
    • Eye makeup
    • Ox-drawn plow
    • Sun clock & water clock
