Editor's Notes
As I reflect on my educational experience of the past 18 months I can think of more positive than negative. Online education was a new experience for me and overcoming my lack of computer experience was my first hurdle. This was a fairly easy one to overcome as the modules included “easy to follow directions”, the professors were helpful, and we the students were encouraged to communicate with one another. There were several opportunities for the students to work together on projects which I thought would not be possible with online education. I did have some difficulty taking Algebra online. Math is my weakest area and it would have been better for me to be in a classroom. I solved that problem by hiring a tutor whom I met with weekly to explain those concepts that were difficult for me. I was fortunate in that I did not have to work during this educational experience and I could afford to hire someone to tutor me. There were other students that struggled with Algebra that did not have the resources that I had which made it quite difficult for them. I truly enjoyed this educational experience in all the other classes and I learned so much more than the actual class content. Some areas of growth for me were improvement in written communication, learning APA style of writing, citing resources properly, and researching online and in the library. In my final semester eBooks were incorporated which I found to be much easier than struggling with actual books. The search feature was very helpful and saved time, being able to highlight text made it easy to go back to important concepts. As I complete this course of study I feel well prepared for the workforce as a counselor and as a nurse specializing in psychiatry/psychology. I have opportunities for employment that were not available to me previously. I am excited to begin using the skills I have learned. Having been a nurse I have had opportunities for continuing education as this is required for my license. Aside from being required I found it also to be essential. Psychology as well as medicine is an ever changing field with new discoveries and new developments in treatment happening on a regular basis. This makes it imperative to be open to learning new things as this affects our patients and clients. I will continue to take advantage of continuing education classes in whatever field I choose to work. There are conferences and workshops available to stay abreast of new developments and review that which I have learned. In my volunteer work as a counselor I have already discovered that I need to stay sharp mentally in order to be the best I can be for my clients. I will continue to seek opportunities for growth as I start work in my field. I have found that employers are very open to providing opportunities for continued learning including reimbursing the cost upon completion. Having been exposed to LinkedIn I recognize the advantages of networking with other professionals and will continue to do so as another way to stay informed about new developments and brainstorming with others in solving problems related to my field. I have joined groups of interest to me relating to the work I wish to pursue in mental health such as Non violent Communication and United States Mental Health Professionals. Journal subscriptions are helpful as well and an easy way to stay abreast of ongoing studies and research and they also provide information about classes and workshops that are available for continuing education. My learning experience at Argosy University was excellent. If in the future I decide to seek higher education Argosy University would be my choice, and I would definitely choose on line education for it’s convenience for a working professional.
