Problems with the model <ul><li>The model makes the following assumptions: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Communication is linear </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Communication begins with the sender </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The intention of the communicator defines the meaning of the communicative event </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The receiver is cognitively passive </li></ul></ul>

Implications for museums <ul><li>Roger Miles (1985) </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Where communication is seen as a linear process, with the message defined by the transmitter, this generally means that the transmitter is the curator, and that curators generally become what he calls the power-brokers in this process, defining themes, approaches and processes of exhibitions from their own viewpoint. An alternative model <ul><li>According to Hooper-Greenhill this new model allows us to: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Understand that museums as cultural and ideological artefacts may be analysed as signifying systems </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Understand that museums can be analysed as intentional communication systems – systems that are socially learnt and socially taught </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Understand that people make their own sense of experience </li></ul></ul>

The post-modernist museum? <ul><li>Now that a model of communication is a part of culture; </li></ul><ul><ul><li>‘ Voice’ becomes relevant </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Communication is integral to culture </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Culture and communication can be seen as both being constructed </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Culture is now understood in an anthropological sense of the patternings of daily life not ‘high’ and/or ‘low’ but a ‘realised signifying system’ (Williams) in which communication is foundational. </li></ul><ul><li>This new communication model emphasises the negotiated processes of meaning making in the complex and unequal cultures of everyday life. </li></ul><ul><li>It also emphasises the importance of interpretive strategies in the making of meaning. </li></ul>

The post-modernist museum <ul><li>What learning theory is embedded in the model - constructivist approach? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Knowledge is constructed through active interpretation of experience. It is plural and fluid and brought into being through experience. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Learning is more important than teaching. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Teaching is about providing stimulating learning environments (ones that allow differentiated learning styles to be used) </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The teacher is understood as another learner working collaboratively as a consultant sharing learning strategies. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Knowledge is culturally situated so knowledge is relative. Learning recognises the importance of multi- and inter- cultural issues. </li></ul></ul>

Interim Conclusion <ul><li>Displays reveal/build on cultural models </li></ul><ul><li>These cultural models themselves embed models of communication </li></ul><ul><li>As we move from an enlightenment modernist culture to a late modern/post-modern culture we are moving towards a different model of communication. </li></ul><ul><li>But how much of the theory is actually applied in practice? How many museum professionals are working in this new episteme? How many post-modern museums are there? </li></ul>
