An estimated three quarters of a billion people visited a social
media site last year. And they all had something to say, whether
good, bad or indifferent. Social media now affects virtually
every area of life from journalism and entertainment to world
politics and most certainly business. Social media has changed
the relationship between business organizations and their
customers, partners and employees. Here are some figures that
provide a sense of the present scale of the rapidly growing
social media phenomenon:
• 770 million people worldwide have visited a social
networking site.
• 500 billion impressions about products and services are
annually shared online by consumers.
• More than 60 percent of those impressions are shared on
Facebook®, with 16 percent of users generating 80 percent
of the messages and posts about products and services.
• 78 percent of consumers trust peer recommendations.
