    • The  Issue   • The  myriad  contribu6ons  of   women  to  the  health  sector  have   never  been  fully  appreciated  or   appropriately  quan6fied  and   hence  have  not  been   appropriately  encouraged   through  policy  and  programmes.    
    • Related  concepts   •  A  large  literature  has  been  devoted  to  quan6fying  all  of  the   contribu6ons  of  women  to  the  global  economy     –  largely  unrecognized  due  to  lack  of  remunera6on  and  the  severe   undervalua6on  of  their  work.     –  the  contribu6ons  of  women  outside  of  the  paid  labour  force  cons6tutes  a   huge  impetus  to  economic  growth  and  human  development.     –  A  major  share  of  these  contribu6ons  are  women’s  6me  devoted  to  ac6vi6es   that  promote  the  health  of  their  families.   •  The  voice  of  women  has  proved  cri6cal  –  many  6mes  over  –  in   promo6ng  rights  to  health  and  furthering  causes  that  promote   health  and  prevent  disease.  These  contribu6ons  –  oDen  through   civil  society  –  also  go  largely  unrecognized  and  are  not  quan6fied.  
    • Objec?ve   •  This  project  will  seek  to  quan6fy  –  in  6me  and   economic  and  social  value  –  the  en6re   spectrum  of  contribu6ons  of  women  to  health   and  the  health  sector  globally.    
    • The  myriad  contribu?ons  of  women   to  health  and  the  health  sector   •  Paid  work  of  women  in  the  health  sector   •  Paid  and  unpaid  contribu6ons  of  women  to  caregiving   •  Paid  and  unpaid  contribu6ons  of  women  to  health   capital  through  civil  society  and  communi6es   •  Non-­‐remunerated  contribu6ons  of  women  to  healthy   ideas   •  A  part  of  the  earnings  of  working  women  are  invested   in  health  directly  or  through  taxa6on  (and  women  are   becoming  the  motor  of  economic  growth)   These  contribu6ons,  even  if  paid,  are  oDen   undervalued  and  under-­‐remunerated.     **factor  to  be  determined**  
    • Project  components   1.  Literature  review   2.  Methodology  for  accoun6ng  for  the  contribu6ons  of  women  to   health  and  the  health  sector  including  cataly6c  contribu6ons   (such  as  advocacy  and  labour  market  leadership)   3.  Detailed  study  of  the  Mexico  case   4.  Review  of  data  available  from  both  high  and  lower  income   countries   5.  Modelling  from  2-­‐3  addi6onal  countries  of  several  core   components  of  the  model   6.  Global  es6mates  of  6me  based  on  (3)  and  (5)  and  data  that  are   available  from  interna6onal  ins6tu6ons.     –  These  data  will  form  the  base  for  projec6ons  under  different  scenarios  –   primarily  associated  with  the  valua6on  of  6me  -­‐  of  the  value  of  women’s   contribu6on  to  health  and  the  health  sector.
