  • 2. OF THE UNITED STATESa) A political Map shows the boundaries of countries and/or statesb) This is the political map of the United States in 1790. It shows the Mississippi River as the farthest western boundary.c) From 1801-1861 new territories were added to the US, changing the political map.
  • 3. II. THE NEWFRONTIERa) Eventually, people wanted to settle new lands. They felt the nation needed more space.b) After 1800, pioneers began traveling beyond the Mississippi River.c) Pioneers-people who explore and settle new areas
  • 4. III. LOUISIANA PURCHASEa) Thomas Jefferson bought land from France to double the size of the USA.b) He hired Lewis & Clark to explore from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Coast.c) They brought back maps and descriptions of people and wildlife that they saw.
  • 5. IV.FLORIDAa) While James Monroe was president, there Wooho were disagreements o! going t I’m o with Spain over for vac Miami ation!! Florida.b) In 1819, Spain gave ownership of Florida to the United States in the Florida Treaty.

  • 7. VI. OREGONTERRITORY a) Originally shared by Great Britain and the US b) Many American settlers traveled the Oregon Trail to live in this frontier land c) 1846-Britain gave full ownership of Oregon to the US
  • 8. VII.CALIFORNIA a) American settlers in California fought against Mexican rule b) After the war with Mexico, California & the Southwest Territory became part of the US
