Online Tools to Engage StudentsObviously, overuse of any instructional tactic should be avoided. Teachers should consistently vary their instructional strategies to engage their students’ based in interest, readiness, and learning profile.
What about the situation when all teachers are assigning paper and pencil written homework . . . are we overloading them with paper? Blogs are just one of myriad 21st century technologies that have proven to be engaging, relevant, and worthwhile.
I would play devil’s advocate and say that students are not necessarily spending "too much time online already" - rather, they are not spending enough quality time learning online. Would you say that a student who is a prolific reader is spending "too much time with books and not enough time interacting with others"?
Blogs are a great way to model appropriate online behavior and empower students to access the Internet to learn instead of simply to socialize.
Regardless of how we feel about technology absolutely no one can deny that it is impacting the way our student learn, express themselves, and interact with others. From whom are students learning how to behave appropriately online or how to use online resources to learn? I can tell you from experience that it is not from their parents. And if they are not learning it in school either that leaves their peers . . . scary thought. 3 years ago

It was used, however, as the focal point for a full-day workshop in which both the pedagogy and the practical applications were addressed.
