Trend Micro Deploys Veeam Across Three Continents

  1. 1. Trend Micro Deploys Veeam Across Three Continents for Always-on Business The Business Challenge Trend Micro Incorporated knows the virtualization industry well. Working in close collaboration with VMware, Trend Micro delivered the first agentless security platform for VMware vSphere-based virtualized machines (VMs) and desktops, as well as vCloud-based cloud servers. The solution, Trend Micro Deep Security, is optimized to preserve VM performance, increase densities and maximize return on investment (ROI). It’s no wonder that a forward-thinking, virtualization-savvy company like Trend Micro would orchestrate an in-depth analysis to find optimum protection for its virtualized applications and data. “As our virtualization footprint grew, we found that our open source solution for backup couldn’t scale accordingly,”said William Dalton, Director of Corporate Technology at Trend Micro.“Backup was slow, leaving us no choice but to back up priority VMs only. Recovery was also slow and difficult. We didn’t have confidence in our ability to recover, and we had no way to replicate VMs for DR. Every day we worried about compromising business performance.” The company faced another challenge—complying with an industry regulation that requires Trend Micro to validate the recoverability of backups. Trend Micro has thousands of VMware vSphere VMs in four datacenters and 103 offices across three continents that support business operations and more than 5,500 employees. “We needed an enterprise solution that met all of our needs,”Dalton continued. “We considered backing up our VMs with the legacy tool we use to back up our physical servers, but that option was quite expensive and provided only limited functionality. We needed features and functionality that would let us get the most from virtualization.” As a security company, Trend Micro couldn’t afford to continue with a backup solution that failed to meet the company’s needs and prevented it from being an always-on business. That’s why Daniel Kaiser, Staff Engineer at Trend Micro, and his colleagues evaluated alternative backup and recovery solutions. Their goal was to find a single solution that provided the following: fast and reliable VM backup, replication and recovery; easy restore for applications they planned to virtualize including Microsoft Exchange and SQL Server; and self-service recovery for designated users. COMPANY: A global leader in security software, Trend Micro Incorporated develops Internet content security and threat management solutions to make digital information exchange safe. Trend Micro’s solutions for consumers, businesses and governments provide layered content security to protect information on mobile devices, endpoints, gateways, servers and in the cloud. INDUSTRY: Software and Internet “If you have a virtualization strategy, Veeam should be your #1 choice for data protection and DR.” — William Dalton Director of Corporate Technology Trend Micro Incorporated SUCCESS STORY
  2. 2. “Our plan was to make the new data protection solution the foundation for DR in our virtual environment, so choosing the right solution was extremely important.” Kaiser said.“During the testing process, we found most solutions to be complex and hard to use, except for one.” The Veeam Solution Trend Micro chose Veeam® Backup & Replication™ for data protection and DR. Veeam is deployed in Trend Micro’s data centers in the United States, Germany, Japan and Taiwan and in the IT research and development center in Cork, Ireland. Veeam backs up thousands of VMs (nearly half a petabyte of data daily) and replicates VMs between data centers for DR. “Veeam replication became our DR strategy,”Dalton said.“We tested failover and have complete confidence in our ability to maintain business continuity with Veeam. Veeam Backup & Replication was a strategic choice for us. We made a deliberate decision to deploy a solution that was designed for virtualization, giving us the features and functionality to make the most of our virtual environment.” “One of the features we like is 1-Click Restore,”Kaiser said.“It lets us recover entire VMs and individual files, and we have the option of delegating restores to designated users. Veeam has other great functionality too, such as item-level recovery for Microsoft Exchange and SQL Server and extensive support for vCloud Director.” Veeam support for vCloud Director (vCD) goes deep with integrated visibility of the vCD infrastructure in the backup console, support for fast-provisioned VMs, and backup and recovery of vApps and VMs directly to vCD, including all metadata and attributes. Another way Trend Micro gets the most from virtualization is by combining tiered storage in Dell Compellent with Veeam’s Instant VM Recovery™, which lets Trend Micro recover VMs from secondary storage at the speed of production storage. Instant VM Recovery restarts a failed VM from a regular backup in minutes and Trend Micro silently migrates the VM and the service it provides back to primary storage with no impact on users. In addition to fast recovery, Veeam helps Trend Micro comply with industry regulations by verifying the recoverability of each backup. Veeam SureBackup® automatically starts a backup (or replica) in a Virtual Lab, performs a series of tests against the backup (or replica) and creates a report on its state and condition. Veeam provided several unexpected benefits to Trend Micro as well. Veeam is agentless, which streamlines deployment and ongoing maintenance and reduces administrative costs. Veeam saved Trend Micro $640,000 in agent licensing fees compared to the company’s legacy backup tool. Veeam streamlined Trend Micro’s software development cycle, speeding time-to- market by 10%. Trend Micro used Veeam’s Virtual Lab capability to create an isolated environment for development VMs, which decreased refresh time from days to hours and enabled concurrent development streams. “Veeam allows us to protect and quickly recover all of VMs, as required for always- on business,”Dalton said.“There’s a trust element with Veeam. We didn’t trust our previous backup tool because it was prone to failure. We have far superior data protection and DR with Veeam.” SOLUTION: Veeam Backup & Replication™ RESULTS: • High-speed recovery: recover entire VMs or individual files in minutes • Data loss avoidance: back up thousands of VMs every day (nearly half a petabyte of data) • Cost savings: eliminate backup agents and $640,000 in associated license fees • Disaster recovery: provide DR for the first time using built-in replication and failover capabilities • Return on investment: leverage backups to streamline software development and speed time-to- market by 10% CHALLENGES: Existing backup tool couldn’t keep up with growing virtual environment, leaving the company vulnerable to downtime and data loss. Granular recovery is available for any virtualized operating system and application. Data loss avoidance: back up thousands of VMs every day (nearly half a petabyte of data) Veeam Backup & Replication is built for enterprise scalability and engineered to back up and recover thousands of VMs and petabytes of data. Trend Micro deployed Veeam across three continents to back up VMs and avoid data loss. Cost savings: eliminate backup agents and $640,000 in associated license fees Veeam Backup & Replication was 40% less expensive than the legacy backup tool that Trend Micro considered for VM backup. Veeam is agentless and licensed per CPU socket. Veeam is storage-agnostic too. Disaster recovery: provide DR for the first time using built-in replication and failover capabilities Veeam replication became Trend Micro’s DR strategy. After testing failover, Trend Micro had complete confidence in its ability to maintain business continuity with Veeam. Trend Micro can fail over to replicas of VMs running all critical applications and services. Return on investment: leverage backups to streamline software development and speed time-to-market by 10% Trend Micro moved software development VMs to a Veeam Virtual Lab—a dedicated, isolated environment, which decreased refresh time from days to hours and enabled concurrent development streams.
