  • THE JONES ACT United States Built To be considered built in the United States a vessel must meet both of the following criteria: All major components of its hull and superstructure are fabricated in the United States, and the vessel is assembled entirely in the United States. The major cost factor in new vessel construction is the propulsion system. The patented Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) system is referred to as Green Technology. LNG, Green Technology, has been the wave and incorporated in large vessels built for shipping companies in International Trade Lanes and in Domestic Trade Lane for Puerto Rico. LNG propulsion will not be utilized for KAMEHAMEHA I for these reasons: a. The Puerto Rico trade lane has ready access to LNG Terminals in Gulf ports and on Puerto Rico. b. The Port of Hawaii has no approved LNG Terminal. c. Hawaii Gas utilizes LNG as a back-fuel source only for its Oahu syngas plant. d. Hawaiian Electric expects to begin LNG shipments in 2016 as replacement fuel for power generation on Oahu, the Big Island, Maui, Molokai and Lanai. e. Slow-steaming will not immeasurably delay deliveries that would cost-justify installation of a big ticket LNG propulsion system for highest-speed delivery. f. Use of low-sulfur fuels and bio-fuels are eco-friendly and environmentally friendly and are available in Hawaii. g. U.S. manufactured engines are available readily on the U.S. Market. ©COPYRIGHT 2014. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. CLIFTON M. HASEGAWA & ASSOCIATES, LLC.
