A Thesis on Drag Racing<br />Drag racing is wonderful<br />(All emotion; no appeal to reason)<br />Drag racing is the perfect sport for today’s youth.<br />(Overstatement; still too much emotion)<br />Drag racing is one of the best of all sports for today’s youth.<br />(Somewhat qualified, but still too general – what does “best” mean?)<br />

A Thesis on Drag Racing (continued…)<br />Drag racing is an excellent way to develop skilled mechanics as well as good drivers.<br />(Better; more specific, but a bit flat.)<br />Today’s drag racing teenager is primarily an automotive engineer, as eager to test his theories as to win races.<br />(Final thesis; reasonable, specific opinion that can be defended.)<br />

A Thesis on Drag Racing (continued…)<br />What changes from one thesis to the next?<br />They become more accurate!<br />What does not change?<br />The writer’s opinion!<br /><ul><li>The final thesis has moved from being a sweeping generalization and expression of prejudice to a specific statement that leads toward a reasonable and informed discussion.</li></li></ul><li>Create a “T-Chart”Thesis: Today’s drag-racing teenager is primarily an automotive engineer.<br />Pros<br />Drivers become expert mechanics<br />Pride in workmanship<br />Respect for rules<br />Most criticism uninformed<br />Importance of safety<br />Cons<br />Dangers of drag racing<br />Drivers are irresponsible, merely attracted by danger<br />Destructiveness (tire burning, etc…)<br />Noisy, dirty<br />
