  9. 9. 9 Aug 2013 Hanna Uusitalo | © KONE Corporation9 8/19/2013 Hanna Uusitalo| © KONE Corporation | Environmental Excellence Six ways to make an escalator eco-efficient 1 2 1. The lubrication-free step chain saves oil, reduces chain wear, and decreases fire risk 2. Regenerative solutions recover energy created when the escalator is used saving up to 60% energy. 4 1 2 3 Eco-efficient operation can save up to 50% energy by slowing down or stopping the escalator when it is not in use or increasing the efficiency of the motor when traffic is low. 4 3 LED lights save 80% energy compared to conventional lighting technologies. 5 Reduced operational speed – 0.4 m/s with an inverter can have energy savings up to 10% depending on passenger traffic, load, motor and drive 6 KONE Direct Drive consumes up to 20% less energy than a conventional worm gear drive.
  10. 10. 10 Aug 2013 Hanna Uusitalo | © KONE Corporation Recycling of used elevator and escalator equipment and packaging Equipment recycling 93 percent of an elevator’s and 82 percent of an escalator’s material weights are recyclable. Eco-efficiency of packaging KONE packaging includes wood (77%), cardboard and paper (11%) and plywood and plastics. Materials are reused or used for energy recovery.
