Practical Test Effort Estimation Practical Test Effort Estimation Presentation Transcript

  • Practical test effort estimation A HBT Series Workshop www.cleansoft.in
  • Estimation is scientific guessing. The keyword is “Scientific”. To enable good testing, a priori estimation of effort that is close to the intended is critical. Correct estimation is typically understood as the outcome of a rich experience. In short this is good guesswork. The perennial question is “Is there a way to scientifically guess?” Can there be a set of techniques, principles, guidelines that can allow us to rationally arrive at good estimates? Is there a science to estimation?Copyright 2011, CleanSoft Academy. All rights reserved. “Practical test effort estimation” Powered by HBT
  • Is there a science to estimation? Guess so!Identify the various activities in test lifecycle and then sum theindividual estimates. How to identify these?Use a goal focused validation. This means1. what types of defects are expected to be uncovered?2. therefore, what types of test do we perform?3. at what level should they be done?4. how many cycles do we anticipate5. how may test scenarios do we anticipate6. do we need use automation? how much?Decomposing the problem allows to figure out the science. • “Practical test effort estimation”is Powered by HBTHypothesis Based Testing (HBT) is a personal scientific test methodologypowered by the defect detection technology STEMTM to deliver cleansoftware. It consists of six stages, with the first two stages focused on“Understanding expectations” and “Understanding context”. The nest stage isabout scientifically hypothesizing defects while the fourth stage is devise aproof that deals with strategy, planning and designDefect centered activity breakdown, a STEM core concept is very useful toestimating effort. This uses the information of quality levels, test types derivedfrom potential defect types and #cycles and #scenarios to estimate effort.Box Model, a core concept in STEM is used to ensure rapid estimation of#scenarios that is not person-dependent.
