  • 1. Classification of Animals EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 1
  • 2. Classifying Living Things  We put livings things into two large groups: Animals Plants EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 2
  • 3. Animals  Animals are spilt into two major groups:  Vertebrateshave a backbone  Invertebrates: Do not have a backbone EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 3
  • 4. Vertebrates  These are animals with a backbone.  There are five groups of vertebrates: Fish Amphibians Reptiles Birds Mammals EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 4
  • 5. Fish  Are cold-blooded.  Live in water  Lay eggs (but some do give birth to live young).  Have a moist skin covered in scales.  Breathe through gills. EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 5
  • 6. Amphibians  Are cold-blooded.  Lay eggs.  Have a smooth, moist skin.  Are able to live on land as well as in the water. EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 6
  • 7. Reptiles  Are cold-blooded.  Lay eggs.  Have a dry skin covered with scales. EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 7
  • 8. Birds  Have feathers and hollow bones  Lay hard shelled eggs  Warm blooded EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 8
  • 9. Mammals  Have hair and produce milk  Give birth to live offspring (no eggs)  Warm blooded EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 9
  • 10. Check your understanding  To which class of vertebrates do the given animals belong? A B C D EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 10
  • 11. E F G H EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 11
  • 12. Invertebrates  These are animals without a backbone  They breathe through their skin and reproduce by laying eggs.  There are three broad groups of invertebrates Worms Molluscs Arthropods EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 12
  • 13. Worms  Have round or flat bodies  Generally have bodies divided into segments  Breathe through their skin EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 13
  • 14. Molluscs  Crawl on a single fleshy pad.  Breathe through their skin  Can have a shell EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 14
  • 15. Arthropods  Have lots of legs and segmented bodies.  There are four group of arthropods:  Spiders Centipedes & Millipedes Crustaceans Insects EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 15
  • 16. Spiders  Have four pairs of legs.  Have bodies divided into two sections EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 16
  • 17. Centipedes & Millipedes  Have long thin bodies and pairs of legs on each of their many body sections EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 17
  • 18. Crustacean  Have five-seven pairs of legs  Bodies covered in shell EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 18
  • 19. Insects  Have three pairs of legs  Bodies divided into three sections  Often have wings EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 19
  • 20. Invertebrates Worms Molluscs EVS-Class V Classification of Animals Arthropods 20
  • 21. Check your understanding A  Classify the animals as vertebrates and invertebrates. B C D EVS-Class V Classification of Animals 21
