  1. 1. Social Entrepreneurship Reloaded: Running a Nonprofit in the 21st Century
  2. 2. A prophecy (1995)?As the market economy and public sectordecline, Rifkin predicted the growth of a thirdsector—voluntary and community-based serviceorganizations—that would create new jobs withgovernment support to rebuild decayingneighborhoods and provide social services. To finance this enterprise, he advocated scalingdown the military budget, enacting a valueadded tax on nonessential goods and servicesand redirecting federal and state funds toprovide a "social wage“ in lieu of welfarepayments to third-sectorworkers. 2

Some definitions:Philanthropy & SponsorsThird, Voluntary or Social Sector & Social enterpricesNonprofits, NGOs & Charity FoundationsAll definitions can be found under:1)  www.wikipedia.com2)  THE NONPROFIT SECTOR: A Research Handbook by W. POWELL & R. STEINBERG (Yale University Press, 1996), 2nd edition 3
  4. 4. Philanthropy etymologically means "love of humanity" in the sense ofcaring for, nourishing, developing, enhancing, what it is to be human. The word was first coined as an adjective, by Aeschylus in PrometheusBound (line 11, 460 BCE), to describe Prometheus character as"humanity-loving" (philanthropos tropos), for having given to the earliestproto-humans, who had no culture, fire (symbolizing all the arts—civilization) and "blind hope"(optimism). The philanthropy is marked at its early stages by the Sponsors who asmore wealthy give to the ones in need within the society and contributeto their development mainly in cultural terms. 4
  5. 5. •  The voluntary sector or community sector (also non-profit sector or "not-for-profit" sector) is the sphere of social activity undertaken by organizations that are not for profit and non- governmental. This sector is also called the third sector, in reference to the public sector and the private sector. Civic sector is another term for the sector, emphasizing the sectors relationship to civil society.•  Social Enterprises, within the social sector or social economy , are often undertakings & ventures (sometimes with the help of sponsors) for employing social workers and making organisation and offered services more efficient. 5
  6. 6. Nonprofits, NGOs & Charity FoundationsA nonprofit organization (US and UK) or not-for-profit organization (UK andothers), often called an NPO or simply a nonprofit. Also, non-commercialorganization (Russia and CIS), often called an NCO, is an organization that useseconomic to achieve its goals rather than distributing them as profit or dividends.Non-governmental organization (NGO) are legally constituted organizations createdby natural or legal people that operate independently from any form of government. Inthe cases in which NGOs are funded totally or partially by governments, the NGOmaintains its non-governmental status by excluding government representatives frommembership in the organization. NGOs are difficult to define and classify, and theterm NGO is not used consistently. As a result, there are many differentclassifications in use.A foundation (also a charitable foundation) is a legal categorization of nonprofitorganizations that will typically either donate funds and support to other organizations,or provide the source of funding for its own charitable purposes.. 6
