  1. 1. St Patrick’s Day When and Why? St. Patricks Day honors St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Irish people celebrate St. Patricks Day on March 17th.
  2. 2. Who was St Patrick? March 17th was not the day St. Patrick was born but the day he died. St. Patrick was born inWales, studied religion and then went to Ireland toteach the people about God.
  3. 3. The legends say that Saint Patrick drove allthe snakes out of Ireland. They all went into the sea and drowned.

  5. 5. The shamrockAccording to legend, Saint Patrick used a shamrock toexplain about God. The shamrock,which looks like clover, has three leaves.Saint Patrick told the people that theshamrock was like the idea of theTrinity – that in the one God there are three divinebeings: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Theshamrock was sacred to the Druids, so Saint Patrick’suse of it in explaining the trinity was very wise.
  6. 6. LeprechaunsThe stories about Leprechauns tell how they arevery clever little creatures. They look like a small,old man.According to the stories,leprechauns are unfriendlyand unsociable.They live alone, and passthe time making shoesfor the fairies.
