What is C-300?

It’s a private members bill

Officially it’s name is: “An Act respecting Corporate Accountability for the Activities of Mining, Oil or Gas in Developing Countries”

It was sponsored by Liberal MP, John McKay

He was concerned about what he was hearing regarding Canadian Companies operating overseas

So working with others who shared his concern, he introduced a bill to address this problem

The bill deals with corporate social responsibility

So... what does that mean?

It means a bunch of things

Companies being environmentally responsible

Being ethical

Protecting Human Rights

So, who is C-300 saying needs to practice Corporate Social Responsibility?

Gas companies

Oil companies

Mining companies

So, C-300 requires Canadian extractive companies to be corporately socially responsible?

That’s right!

It would be a law saying that the government won’t invest any taxpayer money in a company that is not socially responsible

Is this a real problem?

Well…

The people working in the mines care

The children being exposed to tear gas care

The people in the hospital beside the waste dump care

Do you care?

This is a big step to making sure Canadian companies don’t do this kind of thing

Is that worth caring about?

People exposed to tear gas and guns, is that worth caring about?

What does it say about us as a country if we don’t do something?

What does it say if your Members of Parliament just don’t care…

Because to these people it does matter, and it should matter to you
