  5. 5.  Execute all four steps, but less than thorough in doing so  Less thoughtful about meaning of question  Search memory less thoroughly  Integrate information more carelessly  Select response more haphazardly ▪ The first answer a respondent considers acceptable is the one he/she offers
  6. 6.  Omitting the retrieval and judgment steps  Interpret question superficially  Select answer they believe will appear to be reasonable answer ▪ Use cues in the question to identify a response that seems easily defensible with little thought
  7. 7. 1. Selecting the first alternative in a closed question that is acceptable (yielding response order effects) weak2. Acquiescence (agreement with satisficing assertions offered in agree/disagree, true/false, yes/no questions)3. Selecting the status quo (easy to strong defend keeping things the way they satisficing are now)4. Selecting no opinion (easy to claim ignorance)

  10. 10.  Optimising easier for respondents adept at retrieving information and forming a summary judgment Easier for individuals who have had practice in thinking about the topic Easier for people who have stored in memory a preconsolidated answer to precisely the question asked

  15. 15.  Follow conversational conventions  e.g. “every man, woman and child”, “now and then”, “sooner or later”  Positives first “Are you going to buy it or not?” Violations distract Expectations are violated, people are surprised and distracted, so responses are made more slowly and with more error These effects are most apparent among respondents with the least cognitive skills, those with low grades or little formal education
  16. 16.  Say what you need to say, when you need to say it, given the purpose of the conversation (cooperative principle) Example violations  Don’t ask the same question twice  All information provided is relevant and necessary  Offered response options are comprehensive and appropriate  All assertions are true

  19. 19.  When you cannot be sure of the universe of possible answers to a categorical question  “other-specify” does NOT work The only way to be sure of the universe of possible answers is to pre-test  To do the pre-test, need to ask open-ended questions with a full representative sample; i.e. do the study Also ask open ended questions when you seek a numerical answer
  20. 20.  Continuum line – people place themselves on 7 points 7 points better for bipolar dimensions  Keep the middle option The more points, the more moderate the ratings Magnitude scaling – infinite number of scale points relative to an arbitrary point (ratio) – no more reliable or valid
