Making the most of your study time

  2. 2. Making the most of your study time Learning is most effective when students are engaged in thinking.
  3. 3. Making the most of your study time How can we ensure that our study time is spent engaged in thinking about Physics?
  4. 4. Making the most of your study time We need to take apart the knowledge and then re-construct that knowledge. Spending time reading the text, or writing out notes is not effective use of time. Engage in tasks that force you to think!
  5. 5. Making the most of your study time With your study buddy- Use the curriculum statement to set exam questions on a particular topic for one another. Put yourself in the mind of the examiner and prepare questions and answers to test each other and swap them.
  6. 6. Making the most of your study time Make cards of things to remember and carry them with you the next day. Use them to review the ideas during idle moments. This provides lots of alternative “hooks” to help you to learn and recall the information. It allows you to use those idle moments which are otherwise wasted.
  7. 7. Making the most of your study time Associate your learning with a familiar journey. Each landmark can be associated with a different concept, which can then trigger other ideas. Every time you go into your examination room, pick out features that you can associate with the course. In the exam, these features can trigger you memory and allow you to be fluent with the ideas.
  8. 8. Making the most of your study time Look at different ways of connecting the ideas in the course. Making connections is a great way of forcing you to think about the ideas. For example, where do we see “Conservation of Momentum” at work in the course?
  9. 9. Making the most of your study time 2-D Collisions etc – obvious Production of radio-isotopes 2  - photons produced in PET Energy of  - particles in nuclear decay Discovery of the anti-neutrino This is an example of a Grand Unifying Theme – a GUT Get to the GUTS of the matter!
  10. 10. Making the most of your study time GUTS – help us to re-think our understanding, to re-construct our knowledge, to look at the ideas another way. Exercise : In groups of 2 or 3, think of the ways in which Conservation of Energy is mentioned in the Year 12 Course.
  11. 11. Making the most of your study time GUTS – Energy Conservation Projectile motion Uniform circular Motion Motion in electric and magnetic fields Photo-electric effect X-Ray Production Line emission and absorption spectra Mass defect Nuclear decay Fission and Fusion
  12. 12. Making the most of your study time Making these connections is a powerful tool to force you to think about the work and improve the effectiveness of your study. This provides lots of alternative “hooks” to help you to learn and recall the information. It allows you to use those idle moments which are otherwise wasted.
  13. 13. Making the most of your study time Plan your work. When you sit down to study, have a clearly defined task in mind, with a clearly defined end-point. Make certain that you have the resources you need readily at hand. Chart your plans and your progress. This will give you a sense of achievement and an image of growing confidence. (Your parents see it too!!!)
  14. 14. Making the most of your study time Use your resources effectively. Your Study Guide has a wealth of problems in it, which can be used to consolidate your understanding. Make sure you really engage with the questions, before you look at the answers. Avoid the “Oh yeah, I knew that.” syndrome.
  15. 15. Making the most of your study time Use the resources from the SSABSA web-site Curriculum statement – what you need to know and how you need to demonstrate it. Past Exam Papers – don’t just do the questions. Ask yourself, “What ideas and what skills or processes is the examiner testing here?” Think of other ways that you could test the understanding of these skills and concepts. Try to get inside the head of the examiner.
