Aldrin final presentation

 1. 1. Hawaiian Consciencism Hawaiian Consciencism By: C.J. Aldrin
 2. 2. Freedom

“ Nobody can give you freedom. Nobody can give you equality or justice or anything. If you’re a man,you take it.”

”Time is on the side of the oppressed today, it’s against the oppressor. Truth is on the side of the oppressed today, it’s against the oppressor. You don’t need anything else”. -Malcom X

 3. 3. Heritage

“ Every journey begins with a dream, a vision that can unite others. When people come together around a set of shared values they can achieve extraordinary things. It is true that every voyage has its share of hardships. Sometimes the challenges come from outside the community, and other times they come from within. Most often they come from inside ourselves, stemming from feelings of fear and inadequacy. We rely on our teachers and leaders to guide us through times of crisis, to inspire hope and to point us toward new horizons.” - Nainoa Thompson

 4. 4. Ancestry

“ Crossing an open ocean without instruments in knife-edged canoes, as the Polynesians did a thousand years before Cook, is one of the great achievements in human exploration. To those of us who are blind to the night sky, and deaf to the language of clouds, currents and ocean swells, it seems like a mystical or superhuman act. It is not the palu’ s skill is an achievement of reason, memory and calculation, though a staggering one.” - Let Us Praise Famous Men (David Elpern)

 5. 5. Race

“ These Uncle Tom leaders do not speak for the Negro majority; they don’t speak for the black masses. They speak for the ‘black bourgeoisie,’ the brain washed, white-minded, middle-class minority who are ashamed of black, and don’t want to de identified with the black masses.”

“ Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone puts his hands on you, send him to the cemetery .”

-Malcolm X

 6. 6. Racism

“ Racism. That is what is going on right here and right now in Hawai'i. The same thing that's going on against black Americans. The same thing that's going on by Bush. Bush wants to bomb Islamic countries. Why? Because he's a racist. Because Islamic people don't believe in Christianity. Because they have their own region of the world, called the Middle East. Who bombed us? Wasn't Hawaiians.” -Dr. Trask

 7. 7. Culture

“ Don’t let anybody tell you not to be angry. We have every right to be angry. We have every reason to be angry. We ARE angry. And the reason that we’re angry -the reason we are angry -is because this is OUR country, and they took our government and imprisoned our queen”. -Dr.Trask

 8. 8. Land

“ The truth is, there is man and there is environment. One does not supercede the other. The breath in man is the breath of Papa. Man is merely the caretaker of the land that maintains his life and nourishes his soul. Therefore, the ʻāina is sacred. The church of life is not in building, it is the open sky, the surrounding ocean, the beautiful soil…” -George Helm

 9. 9. Colonization / Decolonization

“ I ndigenous people have successfully engaged Western society in the first stages of governance. The movement is founded on an ideology of indigenous nationalism and a rejection of the models of government rooted in European cultural values. What will an indigenous government be like after self-government is achieved? -Taiaiake Alfred

 10. 10. Final Thoughts

Our culture, land, heritage and freedom are the most important factors which we can pass on to our keiki.
