This program gives an overveiw of how to bring Civil War programs and preservation into your classroom. Battlefields are the open air classrooms of America. This programs presents ideas for place based educational activities and promotes civic involvement for students in historic preservation activities.

  • On behalf of CWPT, Bob and I would like to thank you for attending this presentation today. We’d like to invite all of you to do as the slogan goes… Make History by Saving History. Lincoln said, “my fellow citizens, we cannot escape history. No we cannot, but my message here today is that we sure can mess it up! By disregarding it, by neglecting to educate our Nation’s youth as to its importance in our national identity, by reckless development and random disregard for our national historical resources and hallowed grounds. CWPT is the premier Civil War preservation organization in the nation and we would like to see that the irreplaceable hallowed grounds of our heritage do not face destruction and are available to future American generations.

MISSION The Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) works to preserve America's significant Civil War battlefields by protecting the land and educating the public about the vital roles those battlefields played in directing the course of our nation's history. Born from the two leading Civil War battlefield preservation organizations, the Association for the Preservation of Civil War Sites (APCWS) and The Civil War Trust, in 1999, CWPT has helped to save nearly 20,000 acres of Civil War battlefield land representing more than 81 Civil War sites in 19 states. With the help of 63,000 dedicated members, the Trust also promotes heritage tourism and nationwide education initiatives to inform the public about the war and the fundamental conflicts that sparked it.

E Pluribus Unum On-going Classroom Activity Who are “We the People?” <ul><li>Put the words E Pluribus Unum on your board a the beginning of your U.S. History Course. </li></ul><ul><li>Define the words and discuss them with your students. </li></ul><ul><li>Identify what groups are in and what groups are out of power, and why, during the time period you are discussing. </li></ul><ul><li>Use the phrase and this discussion method with class throughout the course so students can see our national identity evolve. </li></ul>

Abraham Lincoln’s Letter to his Son’s Headmaster My son will have to learn, I know, that all men are not just, all men are not true, but teach him also that for every scoundrel there is a hero; that for every selfish politician, there is a dedicated leader... Teach him that for every enemy there is a friend. It will take time, I know, but teach him, if you can, that a dollar earned is of far more value than five found...Teach him to learn to lose...and also to enjoy winning. Steer him away from envy, if you can, teach him the secret of quiet laughter. Let him learn early that the bullies are the easiest to lick...Teach him, if you can, the wonder of a book...but also give him quiet time to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and flowers on a green hillside. In school, teach him it is far more honorable to fail than to cheat...Teach him to have faith in his own ideas, even if everyone tells him they are wrong...Teach him to be gentle with gentle people, and tough with the tough. Try to give my son the strength not to follow the crowd when everyone is getting on the bandwagon...Teach him to listen to all men...but teach him also to filter all he hears on a screen of truth, and take only the good that comes through. Teach him, if you can, how to laugh when he is sad...Teach him there is no shame in tears. Teach him to scoff at cynics and to beware of too much sweetness...Teach him to sell his brawn and brain to the highest bidders, but never to put a price tag on his heart and soul. Teach him to close his ears to a howling mob...and to stand and fight if he thinks he is right. Treat him gently, but do not coddle him, because only the test of fire makes fine steel. Let him have the courage to be impatient...let him have the patience to be brave. Teach him always to have sublime faith in himself, because then he will always have sublime faith in mankind. This is a big order, but see what you can do...He is such a fine little fellow, my son!
