TEESIDE, UK IS CURRENTLY BUILDING A WASTE PLANT WITH THE AIM TO CONVERT 700,000 TONNES A YEAR TO GAS JAPAN HAS 100+ PLANT FACILITIES CONVERTING MORE THAN 7 MILLION TONNES OF NON-RECYCLABLE WASTE INTO RENEWABLE GAS EVERY YEAR Creating a smarter, more sustainable Sydney. ADVANCED WASTE TECHNOLOGY IS ALREADY BEING USED AROUND THE WORLD,ACROSS EUROPE, ASIA AND NORTH AMERICA LAHTI,FINLAND HASTHE LARGEST WASTE PROCESSING PLANT IN THEWORLD CONVERTING 250,000TONNESAYEARTO GAS IN OUR CITY TO HARVEST METALS, RECYCLABLES, ORGANICS AND RENEWABLE ENERGY. MASTER PLAN ADVANCED WASTE TREATMENT (AWT) TREATS WASTE AS A RESOURCE. THE ENERGY CITY 100% GAS EMISSIONS BY 2030,BASED ON 2006 LEVELS IN GREENHOUSE70%REDUCTION TODAY BY 2030 HOUSEHOLD WASTEIS PREDICTED TO GROW WHAT TO DO WITH WASTEWE CAN’T RECYCLE THE CITY OF SYDNEY RECYCLES TWO-THIRDS OF ALL HOUSEHOLD WASTE 40,000 TONNES 80,000 TONNES Which means after recycling and treatment, 27,000 tonnes of non-recyclable household waste is expected to go to landfill. City businesses organise the collection of their own commercial and industrial waste & recycling. DISPOSAL: Less than 5 per cent of the waste will need to be sent for other uses or disposed after treatment. THERE’S A BETTER WAY OVER HALFWAS RECYCLED IF WE CONTINUE THIS WAY, BY 2030 SUSTAINABLESMART LASTYEAR, 267,000TONNES OF COMMERCIAL & INDUSTRIALWASTE WAS COLLECTED MORE THAN 150,000 TONNES OF BUSINESS WASTE WILL GO TO LANDFILL ADVANCED WASTE TREATMENT WASTE CAN BE CONVERTED INTO A RENEWABLE GAS USING EFFICIENT ADVANCED GASIFICATION TECHNOLOGIES MORE THAN 90% OF THE CITY’S WASTE COULD BE DIVERTED FROM LANDFILL DIVER T E D F R O M L A N DFILL 90%AND TURNING NON-RECYCLABLE WASTE INTO RENEWABLE GAS BY RECYCLING THE ADVANCED WASTE TREATMENT MASTER PLAN: IDENTIFIES THE WASTE RESOURCES, POLICIES AND TECHNOLOGIES THAT CONTRIBUTE TOWARD A OUTLINES ACTIONS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO OUR SUSTAINABLE SYDNEY 2030 TARGET RENEWABLE ADVANCED WASTETREATMENT ADVANCED WASTETREATMENT 5. TREATMENT: At high temperature, a gas is generated from waste (without burning) suitable for a range of renewable energy fuels. RECOVERY: A substitute for natural gas can be made for energy or domestic use.  Metals, chemicals, aggregate and even water can be recovered. 3. 4. SORTING: The treatment process starts with sorting to remove oversized materials, or identify hazards such as car batteries or medical waste. PRE-PROCESSING: Sorts any metals for recycling, and shreds or re-sizes remaining waste for handling. 1. 2.
