  2. 2. Ethnicity Defined <ul><li>Social groups which share the same identity, history and cultural roots. </li></ul><ul><li>4.6 million people in the UK are from an ethnic background. </li></ul><ul><li>45% live in London </li></ul>
  3. 3. Ethnicity in TV Drama <ul><li>Focus for intro: </li></ul><ul><li>What stereotypes are being presented in the TV Drama? </li></ul><ul><li>Are they being challenged or subverted? </li></ul><ul><li>A bold confident statement is required. </li></ul>
  4. 4. TASK <ul><li>In your groups draw what you think the following characters look like: </li></ul><ul><li>Young Black Man </li></ul><ul><li>Old Indian Women </li></ul><ul><li>Middle aged Japanese Man </li></ul>

Historical Stereotypes <ul><li>People of black origin: History shows that such actors where associated with light entertainment and humour. </li></ul><ul><li>Uncle Tom  is a derogatory term for a person who perceives themselves to be of low status, and is excessively passive to perceived authority figures. </li></ul><ul><li>E.G- A Black person who behaves in a passive manor to a White person. </li></ul>

Tokenism <ul><li>The use of ethnic minority actors were also known as tokenism. </li></ul><ul><li>Tokenism= use of minority groups in media text to add inclusion. </li></ul><ul><li>Token characters: </li></ul><ul><li>Reduced capacity compared to usual characters. </li></ul><ul><li>Difference over emphasized or made ‘exotic.’ </li></ul>
  7. 7. Black Stereotypes <ul><li>As time has progressed there has also been positive stereotypes of Black people e.g. Black person as a successful athlete. </li></ul><ul><li>But again this general stereotype narrows the talent of which Black people have. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Today! <ul><li>Through certain news reports which have happened recently e.g. London riots young black people have also been associated with crime. </li></ul><ul><li>This stereotype has been used by the media for some time: Black young man as the criminal. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Stereotypes <ul><li>Blue Collar workers has also been another way to represent those of a Black origin. (Shop Worker). </li></ul><ul><li>This has also been the case for characters of Middle Eastern origin. </li></ul>
  10. 10. Middle Eastern <ul><li>Blue collar worker- originated from when migrants came to the UK and presented with service jobs </li></ul><ul><li>Again like other ethnic characters middle eastern characters also had side roles with the main story focusing on the White British. </li></ul>
  11. 11. Middle Eastern <ul><li>Other common stereotypes: </li></ul><ul><li>Family orientated, educated, DRs, storylines about honour killings and forced marriages. </li></ul><ul><li>Shift in representation after 9/11 </li></ul><ul><li>Fear of Muslims, Terrorists, negative portrayal </li></ul>
  12. 12. Far Eastern Origin <ul><li>Not common in TV Drama </li></ul><ul><li>General Stereotype: Clever, Computer experts, technicians, excellent with technology, exclusively Japanese characters in Sci-fi movies. </li></ul>
  13. 13. EXAM <ul><li>Think about the different ethnicities which are being represented. Who are they? Is it a positive or negative representation? </li></ul><ul><li>Do they conform to the stereotype or challenge them? </li></ul>
