Mental Health Awareness - a toolkit for supporting young minds
Prezi and evaluation
1. Unit G324 - Evaluations
Youʼre going to be using Prezi to create your evaluations of your A2 coursework. Prezi is a
simple presentational tool that is a slightly more dynamic alternative to software such as
Powerpoint and Keynote. Where these two pieces of software use slides to enable content
to be presented, Prezi just uses a huge blank canvas on which you place your content.
The final stage of creating a Prezi is to create a path to navigate around all of the different
content.
Youʼre going to create a Prezi account today and begin to start some of the tutorials. Itʼs
very user-friendly and easy to pick up.
Creating a Prezi account
Log on to www.prezi.com.
Click on Sign Up.
Click Go under Student/Teacher Licenses.
2. Click ʻgetʼ at the bottom of the ʻEdu Enjoyʼ column.
Complete all of the required fields to complete the registration. You have to use your first
class email address and put the school website url in the necessary field. Itʼs
www.wbsweb.org.uk.
You then just need to log in to your first class account, open the email from Prezi and click
on the link to verify your new Prezi account.
3. Complete the fields here and choose a password. Once this is done click ʻRegister and
Continueʼ.
Youʼre ready to start creating your first Prezi!
Tips
Donʼt bunch stuff up - use lots of space on the canvas. You wonʼt run out of space.
Use lots of images and video throughout the presentation.
Take care over the presentation of the content - donʼt go wild with too many colours
or fonts as this will make your Prezi messy.
Prezi is a cool way to present information but remember that is all it is - the key thing
is the answers to the 4 questions that you have to answer for the evaluation. If these
are brief and/or basic it wonʼt matter how well theyʼre presented.

5. MUSIC VIDEO - Evaluation Question Guidance.
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
You will need to write a script that ensures you cover the following areas:
1.
introduce yourselves and say exactly what your brief was.
2.
Work your way through the following areas that Andrew Goodwin identified as the
over-arching generic conventions of the music video:
•
Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (eg stage performance in metal
video, dance routine for boy/girl band).
•
There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying,
contradicting).
•
There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying,
contradicting).
•
The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close-ups of the
artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual
style).
•
There is frequently reference to the notion of looking (screens within screens,
telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
•
There is often intertextual reference (to films, TV programmes, other music
videos, etc).
This is taken from his 1992 book Dancing in the Distraction Factory. It is by no means
essential that your video shows all of these characteristics – but you should be able to
explain/justify those that you havenʼt followed.
The first point can be expanded upon very easily – you need to consider the
conventions of music videos for artists in the genre that the song you have chosen fits
into.
If it helps use the sheet that Iʼve given out twice (!) in the past to analyse your own
video.
3.
In addition to the stuff on Goodwin above you can also include some detail on how
closely your own video conforms to the conventions associated with music videos
that are Concept/Narrative/Performance based.
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Quite a straightforward question – youʼre really evaluating what youʼve done in terms of
combining the main and ancillary texts. Acknowledge immediately that you have created
a campaign and have made certain decisions in order to create a consistent and
coherent campaign. Youʼll need to talk about:
•
Genre characteristics across all three texts.
•
Image youʼre trying to construct – refer to the research you did into the artist and
the ways in which theyʼve used the medium of music video.
•
Colours, Fonts, Motifs, recurring images youʼve used.
•
Target audience – who is the campaign aimed at? How have you adopted a
mode of address that would attract that audience?
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
6. Again, relatively straight-forward but think about all of the feedback you have heard
from the very start of the project – even the feedback you got from myself and Ms Oddy
and your classmates at the beginning of the project. Make it clear that you have actively
sought feedback from your audience at all key stages of the project and refer to specific
examples of decisions that you have made (and perhaps occasions where you have
changed your mind as a result of what you have learnt from audience feedback) as a
result of the feedback youʼve received from your target audience.
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and
evaluation stages?
The key word here is “How”! It isnʼt “what”. That may seem obvious but you need to
explain in detail exactly what you have used, how you have used it and why you have
used it. The more detail the better.
7. Short Film – Evaluation Question Guidance
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
You will need to write a script that ensures you cover the following areas:
1.
Introduce yourselves and say exactly what your brief was.
2.
Work your way through your short film and discuss the degree to which it conforms
to or deviates from accepted forms and conventions in the following areas:
•
Narrative structure.
•
Character Types.
•
Settings.
•
Music and Sound.
•
Iconography.
•
Themes.
•
Cinematography.
•
Editing.
•
Mise-en-scene.
Youʼre going to have to think about this quite carefully given that youʼre discussing a
form (short film) that isnʼt really easy to categorise as a genre within which most works
conform to some underlying conventions. You ought to begin by saying this.
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Quite a straightforward question – youʼre really evaluating what youʼve done in terms of
combining the main and ancillary texts. Itʼs slightly different from the music video brief in
that only 2 of the 3 products are really closely related – The film and the poster. The
magazine review page is slightly separate. With the film and the poster you need to
comment on the following:
•
How you have used the poster to market the short film – image, text, tagline,
director/stars.
•
How you have communicated the genre in both the short film and the poster.
•
Who the target audience would be and how you have targeted them in both the
film and the poster.
In terms of the magazine review page just talk through and explain all of the decisions
that you made about layout/title/photographs/copy etc.
What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Again, relatively straight-forward but think about all of the feedback you have heard
from the very start of the project – even the feedback you got from myself and Ms Oddy

8. Documentary – Evaluation Question Guidance
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
You will need to write a script that ensures you cover the following areas:
Introduce yourselves and say exactly what your brief was.
Work your way through your documentary and discuss the degree to which it
conforms to or deviates from accepted forms and conventions in the following areas:
•
Use of a presenter.
•
Presenterʼs address and costume.
•
Settings.
•
Music and Sound.
•
Interviews.
•
Library footage.
•
Editing.
•
Mise-en-scene.
•
Graphics.
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
Quite a straightforward question – youʼre really evaluating what youʼve done in terms of
combining the main and ancillary texts. Itʼs slightly different from the music video brief in
that only 2 of the 3 products are really closely related – The documentary and the
newspaper advertisement. The listings page is slightly separate. With the documentary
and the newspaper advertisement you need to comment on the following:
•
How you have used the advertisement to market the documentary – image, text,
tagline.
•
Who the target audience would be and how you have targeted them in both the
documentary and the advertisement.
In terms of the magazine listings page just talk through and explain all of the decisions
that you made about layout/title/photographs/copy etc.
