  2. 2. Intro <ul><li>Although it is apparent that the genre Thriller has its own generic conventions, the sub genres involved have unique conventions of its own. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Psychological Thrillers <ul><li>conflict between the main characters is mental and emotional rather than physical. </li></ul><ul><li>The Sixth Sense and The Talented Mr. Ripley are examples of psychological thrillers. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Psychological Thrillers <ul><li>The suspense created by psychological thrillers often comes from two or more characters preying upon one another’s minds. </li></ul><ul><li>This could be done either by playing deceptive games with the other or by merely trying to demolish the other’s mental state. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Common Themes <ul><li>Reality </li></ul><ul><li>Perception </li></ul><ul><li>Mind </li></ul><ul><li>Existence </li></ul><ul><li>Purpose </li></ul><ul><li>Identity </li></ul><ul><li>Death </li></ul>
  6. 6. Action Thriller <ul><li>Often feature a race against the clock </li></ul><ul><li>Violence and an obvious antagonist </li></ul><ul><li>Contain large amount of guns, explosions and elaborate set pieces for action to take place. </li></ul>
  7. 7. Action Thrillers <ul><li>Non Diegetic sounds- fast pace music to add to the action. </li></ul><ul><li>Hero- Male and/or female protagonist </li></ul><ul><li>Motives- Money, Secrets, object etc. </li></ul>
  8. 8. TASK <ul><li>Choose two thriller films which are within different sub genres. </li></ul><ul><li>Compare the films through a textual analysis on the conventions involved within each film. </li></ul><ul><li>How are the conventions different and/or similar? </li></ul>
