  • 1. REST Lesson 8
  • 2. “ The Sabbath… belongs to Christ… Since He made all things, He made the Sabbath. By Him it was set apart as a memorial of the work of creation. It points to Him as both the Creator and the Sanctifier… Then the Sabbath is a sign of Christ's power to make us holy. And it is given to all whom Christ makes holy… To all who receive the Sabbath as a sign of Christ's creative and redeeming power, it will be a delight .” E.G.W. ( The Desire of Ages, p. 289 )
  • 3. “ By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy , because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done ” Genesis, 2: 2-3 NIV THE SABBATH IS HOLY BECAUSE IT WAS SET APART BY GOD
  • 4. SABBATH IS SIGN “ Also I gave them my Sabbaths as a sign between us, so they would know that I the LORD made them holy ” Ezekiel, 20: 12 NIV
  • 5. SABBATH IS SIGN OF CREATION “ Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day . Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy ” Exodus, 20: 8-11 NIV
  • 6. SABBATH IS SIGN OF REDEMPTION “ Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the LORD your God has commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor the alien within your gates, so that your manservant and maidservant may rest, as you do. Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm . Therefore the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day ” Deuteronomy, 5: 12-15 NIV
  • 7. “ Keep my Sabbaths holy, that they may be a sign between us. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God ” Ezekiel, 20: 20 NIV How should we keep the Sabbath? KEEP IT HOLY
  • 8. HOW TO KEEP THE SABBATH HOLY “ If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the LORD's holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words …” Isaiah, 58: 13 NIV
  • 9. WALKING along God's ways. DOING God's will. SPEAKING about God. HOW TO KEEP THE SABBATH HOLY
  • 10. “… then you will find your joy in the LORD, and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob. The mouth of the LORD has spoken ” Isaiah, 58: 14 NIV
  • 11. THE LORD OF THE SABBATH “ For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath ” Matthew, 12: 8 NIV
  • 12. OUR MODEL “ Then he said to them, «The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath»” (Mark, 2: 27 NIV)
  • 13. OUR MODEL “ The Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read ” (Luke, 4: 16 NIV)
  • 14. “ At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath ” (John, 5: 9 NIV) OUR MODEL
  • 15. “ Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest ” Matthew, 11: 28 NIV
  • 16. “ The Sabbath is a token between God and His people. It is a holy day, given by the Creator to man as a day upon which to rest, and reflect upon sacred things. God designed it to be observed through every age as a perpetual covenant. It was to be regarded as a peculiar treasure, a trust to be carefully cherished. As we observe the Sabbath let us remember that it is the sign which heaven has given to man that he is accepted in the Beloved; that if he is obedient, he may enter the city of God, and partake of the fruit of the tree of life. As we refrain from labor on the seventh day, we testify to the world that we are on God's side, and are striving to live in perfect conformity to His commandments. Thus we recognize as our sovereign the God who made the world in six days and rested on the seventh ” E.G.W. (Our High Calling, p. 343)
