The #OccupationApp allows Occupiers from around the globe to occupy any space and collectively align on ideas and actions.

This is a rough concept that is heavily influenced by Turntable.fm. Please send me a message if you would like to help out with the design or development of the app.

  • I'm very excited about this concept. Are you creating an electronic voting application for mobile devices? If you are, please remember a few things. The most important thing is to protect against any hint of voter fraud or hacking. You'll have to protect the app from committing voter fraud and becoming a victim of it. That may also apply to the broadcast of the message. The second is almost as important if not equally so, and that is to conduct usability testing from the conceptual phase clear through deployment of the application. Those two things are extremely important. It will also be helpful to include context-sensitive help wherever feasible. Thank you for your excellent work. I'm sure it's going to have a very positive impact.

  • Hi Christopher,
I think the application should permit two dimension feedback:

Especially how much have they understood. This would give an immediate feedback on what needs to be explained better, who is not making much sense, and who can help out in what.

    Cheers,
    Pietro

  • As a strong supporter of #OccupyWallStreet, I wanted to find to a way to contribute my talents to the movement. Instead of focusing on the politics or the issues which might exclude a percentage of the 99%, my vision for the app focuses on the revolutionary way that Occupiers broadcast their message and collaboratively decide their course of action. By focusing less on the politics and more on the ’governance,’ my hopes are that many more organizations will be able to use the app in order to occupy their businesses, their classrooms, along with their local governments.

The biggest influence on the vision of the app is Turntable.fm, a somewhat obscure music web and mobile app which allows DJs to collaboratively share music with their fans. When you enter a room you are identified by an avatar which is bobbing its head along with all of the other people in the room. At the front is the DJs on queue with a spotlight on the current DJ. A large voting tool dominates the bottom of the screen with two buttons to like or dislike the music, below a graph which displays the current popularity of the song.

Even though Turntable.fm is all about the music, it got me thinking about the problem that some Occupiers have with broadcasting their voice to a large audience. #OccupyWallStreet created a wonderful system of repeating what you’ve heard to everyone around you; however, the CinchCast API that is used on numerous webcasts and teleconferencing systems, could increase the range of the ’People’s Mic.’ This would also allow their messages to be recorded and heard by a wider audience at a later time.

While the concept looks to be quite similar to Turntable.fm, it includes two very important differences in addition to the CinchCast API:

Occupiers can create and join spaces through a panel on the right side of the screen (in place of the DJ Queue on Turntable.fm) This enables users to switch between spaces and receive notifications when new activity occurs.

In addition to Agree/Disagree, the voting tools include additional choices to raise a point of process, or block any further action on a particlar issue. These activies reflect the hand gestures used in a General Assembly.

If you’re a designer or developer, I would also enjoy working with you in order to make this vision a reality.
