[re]think : Shanghai - Overview

WHEN GOOD PEOPLE COME TOGETHER, GREAT THINGS HAPPEN. At [re]think: Shanghai, we’re gathering together innovators, investors and entrepreneurs from around the world to expose new ideas in cross border tech, business and sustainability. Just like our first [re]think: in Hawaii last year, we’re again bringing together a unique group from around the world to rethink the old ideas and explore new ideas. For three days, we’ll look at businesses without borders, from the lean startup model emerging from Silicon Valley to Chinese companies wanting to go global to shared interest in story telling the China experience from a first hand perspective. [RE]THINK : SHANGHAI GOALS [re]think brings together a diverse group of people from different sectors and provides an opportunity for them to connect and build relationships that sets the tone for connect some new friendships and positive business relationships in the future. [re]think chooses a setting -- whether it’s an island with aloha spirit or a city hosting the largest world expo in history -- that inﬂuences new ideas while causing people to inﬂuence stop and rethink the current status quo. what sets [re]think attendees apart from others is the second nature characteristic of sharing ideas, thoughts and experiences -- not only amongst each other -- but with a share network of friends and followers via social media. This is how ideas truly spread and make an impact over time from this group.

SPEAKER ron posner Mr. Posner has been a leader in the consolidation of the high technology, internet and software industries for more than 30-years. He has a strong track record as CEO, investor and board member of improving market values and liquidity results for public and private companies in record time frames. He started his career at The Coca-Cola Company and Xerox Data Systems in sales and marketing roles. He then led two successful liquidity events in the computer services business at National Training Systems, which he founded and sold to Safeguard Scientifics (SFE), and Tratec, which was taken public and then sold to McGraw Hill. He then led consolidation and turnarounds in the PC and enterprise software industries from the early 80’s to the mid-90’s as CEO of Peter Norton Computing, which he merged with Symantec (SYMC); as CEO of Wordstar, which he merged with The Learning Company to create over $3B in market value after 20 consumer software acquisitions; and at Ansa software (CEO role) and Ashton-Tate (Exec VP role), both of which were merged into Borland (BORL). He was an investor and board director of Cyber-Media, which was sold to McAfee (MFE), and SmallWorld in the UK, which was sold to General Electric. He was also an early investor in Segue Software (SEGU), sold to Borland. Mr. Posner then participated in the growth and consolidation of the internet industry, starting in the mid-90’s, as a startup investor/board member in Match.com, sold to InterActive Corp (IACI); Spinner.com, sold to AOL; NetAngels/Firefly, sold to Microsoft; Rival Networks, sold to Telefonica; Flipside.com, sold to Vivendi, and Click2learn merged with Docent to form Sum Total Systems (SUMT). He remains an active investor in www.iwin.com. Since its formation in 1997, PS Capital, has made investments in and provided advisory services to the telecom,wireless and digital media industries. PS Capital also led the recapitalization of Novatel Wireless (NVTL), increasing the stock price 20-fold, and made investments in Wired Assets, eChinaCash, Iris Wireless and Media Cannon. photo: kenny hindgren Mr. Posner was a Venture Partner at Saints VC (www.saintsvc.com), focused on secondary venture transactions. He also serves on the advisory boards of First30Services, Flow Mobile, Next Stage Ventures (Paris), and Minerva/Sabanci Ventures (Turkey). He was the first Entrepreneur-In-Residence. at Mayfield Fund in 1988. Additionally, Mr. Posner serves on the boards of eChinaCash, Altius Education, MPowerLabs and Razorsight, and is an investor in several VC Funds, including NEA and JP Morgan Technology Partners. He received his MBA from Harvard Business School and a BS Math degree from Rensselaer.

[RE]THINK’S REACH REACHING A GLOBAL AUDIENCE Dozens of key inﬂuencers, traditional and new media attendees will be sharing their experience with their network via social media. Pictures, audio, videos, tweets, Facebook updates, blog posts ...stories will move from ﬁrst hand insight of attendees into their social networks in addition to traditional media and PR coverage of the week’s events. [RE]THINK : SHANGHAI TRACKS This year’s GeeksOnAPlane Asia tour will kick off in Shanghai at [re]think. A group of 30 startup entrepreneurs and investors from Silicon Valley, Europe and Asia will tech connect with local Chinese entrepreneurs and investors in a series of events including fast pitch sessions, cocktails, dinners and visits to Chinese startups. Afﬁnity Ventures China and Heritage Equity Partners will present a track that connects entrepreneurs and investors from the US who are interested in investing in investing China with Chinese entrepreneurs who are interested in going global. Events will include opportunities to discuss the challenges of doing business in China as well as connect on outbound Chinese investment, M&A and IPO trends. Green sector inﬂuencers and leaders from Go Green Initiative, Greennovate and JUCCCE will highlight key trends in China’s sustainability. Through interviews, tours of sustainability green companies and events that bring together international and local Chinese leaders in the green sector.

SHANGHAI WORLD EXPO Shanghai was chosen as the city to highlight during this [re]think to take advantage of the timing of the Shanghai World Expo. Attendees of [re]think will have the opportunity to explore the expo during the day while much of the key networking opportunities take place at night. The theme of the expo is “Better City - Better Life” and signiﬁes Shanghai’s new status in the 21st century as a major economic and cultural center. An estimated 70 million visitors are expected to attend between May and October 2010.
