    4. 4. Summertime Safety • Warmer temperatures aren't just attractive to people, but to mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas. • To prevent these illnesses, use an appropriate insect and tick repellent and apply it properly. • Prime mosquito-biting hours are usually dusk to dawn • Ticks are out at all times • Protect yourself and your family from recreational water illnesses (illnesses caused by germs or chemicals in recreational water) by doing your part to keep germs out of the pool. • Do not swim when you have diarrhea. • Don't swallow pool water. • Take a shower before swimming. • Wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers. • Prevent skin cancer. • Avoid being outdoors during the midday if the sun is intense. • Use sunscreen with at least SPF 15. • Cover up with clothing. • Wear a brimmed hat. • Wear sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays. • Be aware of the signs of heat stress. • Symptoms of heat stroke include: • Hot, dry skin or profuse sweating • Hallucinations • Chills • Throbbing headache • High body temperature • Confusion/dizziness • Slurred speech
    5. 5. Say NO to “normal” The most common choice is a DEET based repellent. DEET is a registered pesticide. The most serious concerns about DEET are its effects on the central nervous system. Experts recommend that if using DEET, its best to wear long sleeves and long pants, when possible, and apply repellent to clothing rather than skin to reduce exposure. They state DEET based products should only be applied sparingly; saturation does not increase efficiency. DEET repellents should not be inhaled. Repellent- treated clothes should be washed, or kept outside living areas to reduce exposure.
    6. 6. Hello non-toxic repellant! They need to be applied more frequently than DEET based repellents, but they do not carry the same health risks. Citronella products in the study provided about 30-40 minutes of protection. Repellents based on essential oils including citronella, teatree and eucalyptus. Citronella, teatree and eucalyptus are volatile oils and may trigger reactions in some people, particularly the chemically sensitive. Planting mosquito repelling plants like lemon balm, catnip, basil and lemon geraniums around outdoor sitting areas and encouraging mosquito predators like bats and dragonflies can help reduce mosquito populations.
    7. 7. Homemade Bug Repellents
    8. 8. Waterborne Illnesses Contaminated water can be found in swimming pools, water parks, lakes, rivers, and oceans. Cryptosporidium is one of the most frequent causes of waterborne disease in the U.S. It's the germ that causes diarrhea and can survive for days even in chlorinated pools. Swimmer's ear is an infection that develops when contaminated water sits in the ear canal for a long period of time. It can cause pain and discomfort.
    9. 9. Some Treatments For Waterborne Illnesses Your best choices for replacing extreme fluid loss are clear liquids including water, broth, herbal tea and light fruit juices. Diarrhea will wreck havoc on your digestive system so even when you are feeling better, stick to simple, bland foods (bread, crackers, cereal, rice, potatoes, lentils, pasta, or bananas) and plenty of water. For Swimmer’s Ear Your doctor may gently clean your ear with a cotton- tipped probe or a suction device to relieve irritation and pain. Also, antibiotic ear drops are necessary to treat this problem. You may also be given a prescription for antibiotics to take by mouth as well as pain medication, if needed.

    11. 11. Power in Prevention Given the epidemic of skin cancer in this country, sun safety should now be an important part of our lives. Only 14 percent of 1,232 products analyzed met EWG's criteria for safety and effectiveness. In fact 8 percent of high SPF sunscreens (SPF of at least 30) protect only from sunburn (UVB radiation), and do not contain ingredient combinations known to protect from UVA, the sun rays linked to skin damage and aging, immune system problems, and potentially skin cancer. Currently the FDA does not require that sunscreens guard against UVA radiation.
    12. 12. Toxic Sunscreen • Avoid spray or powder suntan lotions with nano- scale zinc oxide. • Avoid oxybenzone. • Make sure the sunscreen has at least 7 percent zinc oxide to replace oxybenzone. • Avoid fragrance.

    15. 15. The 411 of Heat Stroke • Who: • Infants • The elderly (often with associated heart diseases, lung diseases, kidney diseases, or who are taking medications that make them vulnerable to dehydration and heat strokes) • Athletes • Individuals who work outside and physically exert themselves under the sun • What to do: • Get the victim to a shady area, remove clothing, apply cool or tepid water to the skin (for example, you may spray the person with cool water from a garden hose), fan the victim to promote sweating and evaporation, and place ice packs under the armpits and groin. • If the person is able to drink liquids, have them drink cool water or other cool beverages that do not contain alcohol or caffeine. • Monitor body temperature with a thermometer and continue cooling efforts until the body temperature drops to 101 to 102 F (38.3 to 38.8 C). • Always notify emergency services (911) immediately. If their arrival is delayed, they can give you further instructions for treatment of the victim. • What to look for: • nausea, • vomiting, • fatigue, • weakness, • headache, • muscle cramps and aches, • dizziness, • high body temperature, • the absence of sweating, with hot red or flushed dry skin, • rapid pulse, • difficulty breathing, • strange behavior, • hallucinations, • confusion, • agitation, • disorientation, • seizure, and/or • coma
