In this presentation I am going to be reviewing how I have used various new media technologies throughout the research, planning, production, and evaluation processes of my coursework. For each technology, I will explain how itwas used, whether it was beneficial to me, what skills I have learnt by using it, and what the impact was on the final productions.
ComputersComputers were used throughout the variousprocesses as they allowed me to create thecontent required. The three products wereall digital media products, which can only becreated using computers. The computers werealso used for research purposes as we couldeasily access information on the internet. The computer was very beneficial to me, aswithout it, I would not have been able tocreate digital media products, and myresearch and planning would have taken muchlonger. It has for this reason, impactedgreatly upon my productions, as they wouldnot exist if not for the computer. The skills that I have learnt while usingcomputers have mostly been on the software Iused, which I will analyse later in thepresentation.
The InternetThe internet was used heavily throughout theresearch process, and also used to presentmy work and evaluation. Search engines likeGoogle helped me to research all of thetopics that I needed to in order to understandnew media products. Other websites, includingYouTube, Blogger, and FreeplayMusic werealso used throughout the four processes, andwill be explained later in the presentation. The internet was extremely beneficial to meas it gave me access to information and othermedia products that I needed to research. Italso gave me a virtual area to present mywork, which can then be seen anywhere byanyone. The internet has made my workpossible and much easier to create.I have learnt research skills, and skills withvarious websites that I have used.
Texting & EmailTexts and emails were used to organise filmsessions with actors for the filming process. Both technologies allowed me to talk to myactors without having to meet them, and alsogave them a method of contacting me in thecase that they couldn’t make it to the filmsessions. I used these processes to give theactors dates, costume requirements, andinformation on their role.Texting and emailing was very helpful as itsaved a lot of time and hassle in organisingactors and film sessions. Without them, thefilming process may have taken much longer.
BloggerBlogger is a free blog creation and hostingwebsite that I used to present my work. Icreated posts for each topic of the fourprocesses, and embedded images and videos, including my final productions. I also sent outthe URL of my blog to some peers, so theycould provide feedback on my creations.Blogger was helpful for presenting my work.It is a very easy to use website with lots offunctionality. It can also be viewed by anyone, from anywhere which was useful for audiencefeedback. Although I could have used anotherblog website, Blogger was chosen because ofit’s accessibility and popularity.I have learnt how to use the website well, andtried to present my work in a creative way, which has got better with more practise withthe website.
YouTubeYouTube is a website where people can uploadtheir videos for free. I used this website toupload my final teaser trailer, and also, part two of my evaluation. YouTube is veryeasy to use, and can be easily embedded into aBlogger post. This was the reason why I usedit to host my videos.YouTube was beneficial to me as it gave mesomewhere to upload and host my trailerand evaluation pt.2 for free. I was able tosend out the link to my trailer to peers forfeedback, and able to embed the video intomy blog. From using YouTube, I have learnt how toupload videos, which is something I haven’tdone before.
Microsoft WordMicrosoft Word was used for many parts ofmy research and planning processes. It is avery simple program used for writing textdocuments. It can also be used to createtables, which is what I mostly used it for. Thereason I didn’t use it to type up all of mywork is because Blogger already has a postcreator with all the functionality that Ineeded apart from table design.Tables like my Shot List and Actor Call Sheetwere created using Word so it was useful inmy planning processes. I could have usedother programs like excel to create tables, but they tend to take more time.I already knew how to use Word, so I haven’tlearnt any new skills during the course ofusing it.
Microsoft ExcelMicrosoft Excel was used to create graphsand tables that I could not create in word. Itis a spreadsheet program that also has atable design function to create differenttypes of table easily. I used Excel to createmy pie charts from my audience questionnairefeedback. The graphs look great and are easyto interpret.Excel didn’t have much of an impact on myoverall productions as it only was used tocreate the audience questionnaire feedbackgraphs. However I wouldn’t have known whatelse to use to create these graphs so it wasstill useful and had a small impact on mywork.I also didn’t learn anything new while usingExcel as I already know how to use it.
Digital/Film CamerasI used two cameras to film my productionsand take pictures for my magazine coverand poster. My filming camera was a smalldigital camera. It had a good qualityimage, and was portable and easy to use.The camera used to take the pictures was alarger camera with a better quality imagebut no video functionality. The cameraswere used, along with a tripod, to film andphotograph some great quality footagefor my productions. The cameras have impacted greatly uponmy productions as without the use of them,I would have no footage for my teasertrailer and no images for my poster ormagazine cover.I have learnt many skills while using thesecameras. These skills are mainly filmingskills but also skills with the individualcameras, meaning that I can now be morecreative when taking videos or pictures as Iknow what the cameras can do.
Adobe PhotoshopCS5Photoshop was used to create my poster andmagazine cover. It is a program that takes awhile to get used to, but can be used to createamazing products. The text on my magazinecover and poster was all created inphotoshop with the default fonts and plug-ins. I also used photoshop to edit my images,by making the colours look better, andremoving any unwanted marks or objects.Photoshop was beneficial in creating myproducts as it gave me a way to createadvanced, professional looking, attractivecreations. If I had used a different program, like paint, my products would have lookedboring or unprofessional.Although I already had basic knowledge ofhow to use photoshop, I have learnt manymore skills while creating my poster andmagazine cover, like how to remove marksand correct colours. I can now be much morecreative when using photoshop.
Adobe PremiereCS5Premiere is a video editing software used toedit footage for videos. I used it to transformmy raw footage into my final trailer. To dothis, I imported all of my footage into theprogram and then started to edit the clipstogether and cut them down to the rightlength. After I had edited the raw footage, Iadded transitions, and titles, which arecreated within the program. I also importedmusic and edited it with Premiere.Premiere was very helpful for creating mytrailer as it is quite a simple editing programyet can still be used to create professionallooking, great videos. I could have used othervideo editing programs like Sony Vegas orFinal Cut, but they were not available and aremore advanced and harder to learn.I had no knowledge of Premiere beforecreating my trailer so everything I did was anew skill that I learnt. I can now edit footageand create good products, so have become
Music DownloadsThe music used for my trailer wasdownloaded from a website calledFreePlayMusic. I was able to use this site todownload the music that I wanted to usequickly, and for free instead of having to geta physical copy of it on disc. The music wasthen imported into my Adobe Premieretrailer file, and edited to fit the footage. This was very helpful as I had to findcopyright free music, which is very hard tofind on disc. Therefore, downloading it fromthe internet was the only viable option.Without music, my trailer wouldn’t have beenvery good.I haven’t really learnt many skills fromdownloading music as there aren’t many tolearn from the specific task. I have howeverlearnt some royalty free music downloadwebsites which I can use for future creations.
