Daniel Seeger refused to go to war when he was drafted
by the United States Military, he then claimed it was
against his, “belief in goodness and virtue for their own
sakes, and a religious faith in a purely ethical creed.”
He was arrested and charged with draft-dodging
He appealed the conviction and claimed this was
unconstitutional and went against the 1st amendment
The government then appealed

1964 through March 8, 1965

7. WHY?
Daniel Seeger went against the court because he
felt like his first amendment was being taken
away from him
He claimed that his religious beliefs went against
going into the military
He claimed this was unconstitutional
8. HOW was the decision made?
Daniel Seeger didn’t claim a supreme being, but
the Court ruled in his favor and all charges were
dropped; he didn’t have to go into the military

amendment says “freedom of religion”; therefore
they saw that his religious beliefs were against war
and he didn’t have to join the draft

his religious beliefs and rule in his favor
